welcome to the world of needing to re-recruit all your underclassmen every March/April with playing time assessments and NIL possibilities.
If the Illini recruit players that are complementary to the existing/incoming talent then this is a win win selling point that is attractive to both existing Illini and portal players. Let's get guys that want to play with Ty, Amani and Morez and keep the committed players happy.

This keeps all parties on their best behavior all the time - coaches and players. Coaches have to stay extra present and extra attentive and give their very best to their players without the ease and crutch of knowing the player is locked in to them for four years. And the players want to do well all the time because if they don't they will not help their cause for staying with their current team nor are they building a good resume for any future locales they might want to move to.

Sure, it might create some yearly chaos with rosters and chemistry. But it's still basketball and guys finding out how to play well with each other and pursue a common goal of success. This is 'good' chaos.

And you also sort out the guys who really do love your program because they are the ones that stick around. Not just playing for self but for something bigger.

I think someone figured that Bruce Weber make $5000 a hour working 60 hours a week.
I am not going to have a massive amount of empathy for coaches.
But geez, what pain and a souce of stress that must be, particularly if there is a losing season, team dissension or off-court problems
We have not seen many off-court problems involving the "agents of institutonlized social controll" :)
Self probably should get out now and reduce the stress level in his life.

Someone figured wrong. That's $300,000 per week.

Moretti isn’t listed on the first page as being on the roster. Just curious as mentioned that we are looking for experienced PG and have DGL coming. Seem to also remember a post that said he (Moretti) would be a couple of years from playing time. The staff would probably have a pretty good idea now as he has practiced this semester. Any enlightenment by anyone?

He should be listed, as should everyone else who hasn’t yet entered the transfer portal. I get the whole idea that the roster is now a year to year thing, but it seems silly to me that we must assume no one is returning until they give some sort of confirmation.

So the current landscape seems to be that we should think of every player as on a 1-year contact which they might have an option to renew based on eligibility. Something tells me somebody -- unis, NCAA, NIL sponsors -- will eventually re-assert at least some institutional control.

On the Saturday Sportstalk, Loren Tate said he was told by Brad Underwood that the second time transfer rules are already being challenged in court. That didn’t necessarily mean that someone the Illini are pursuing is challenging it, only that Brad was aware that someone has already begun that process.

All it's going to take is one judge to issue an injunction (possibly nationwide injunction) against the NCAA and say that the athlete would likely win in court and suffer irreparable harm if he isn't allowed to transfer a second time without sitting out a year. At that point, it'll be open season on two-time transfers while that case is fought in court and possibly winds up with SCOTUS at some point.

A player like Curbelo, in particular, who had his new coach come out and publicly say he doesn't want him, would be an ideal candidate to sue the NCAA.

Curbelo’s coach was fired. Shouldn’t he be able to transfer without penalty regardless of whether he already transferred.

Yes, if he was told he would not be renewed / does not figure into plans.

Otherwise no. He signed with St. John's. Not with Mike Anderson. The university provides his scholarship, classes, and other facilities. Not the coach.
