Reading between the lines, it sounds like Underwood wasn't impressed with the rest of the Emerald field and wants to fulfill Illinois' obligation to be a part of the event when there are stronger teams playing.

Oh good, another fun pro-fan thing destroyed by conference imperialism.
I totally agree with your overall point, but I never really cared much for the Gavitt Games. It's losing the Big Ten/ACC Challenge that was really sad for me.

Kind of surprised we have not set something up with the Big XII ... a lot of natural matchups, and both leagues are in with FOX.

EDIT: Just a sample of interesting matchups!

Illinois vs. Kansas - Self connection
Indiana vs. Houston - Sampson connection
Iowa vs. Iowa State - Natural rivalry, already play
UCLA vs. Arizona - Former Pac-12 rivals
Nebraska vs. Colorado - Former football rivals for Black Friday
Ohio State vs. Cincinnati - Instate dynamic
Oregon vs. Utah - A lot of great football battles in the Pac-12
Penn State vs. West Virginia - Border war of sorts in the making?

I think there are multiple interesting matchups for each school as well.
Surprisingly seems more appealing than b10-acc

True that. Using just Illinois...

Arizona - A ton of history (e.g., 2001 and 2005 Elite Eight classics)
Houston - Kelvin Sampson bad blood
Iowa State - Sweet Sixteen rematch
Kansas - Bill Self connection
Kansas State - Brad Underwood connection
Oklahoma State - Brad Underwood connection
West Virginia - Chet connection

And if it had been last season (or the one before), you could have added Texas Tech and Baylor for transfer connections for TSJ, Dain, Mayer, etc.

Great to see players graduating

How does the NCAA measure academic performance of a school now that a player can transfer multiple times

It seems like all our players are decent students while being good basketball players. BU deserves credit for that
The next logical step is the determination that the players are employees and not students, so therefore do not have to attend class or graduate. On top of that, the five to play four requirement will go out the window and we will have people with 10 year "college" careers. And that, boys and girls, will suck.

that sucks bill murray GIF

yup

Sonny Dykes yesterday :
There is such a big difference right now between the haves and the have nots and I think we'll eventually split into two separate divisions," he said. "Alabama and Louisiana Tech aren't playing the same sport."

the P4 & G5 will split . It’s inevitable . They won’t even play each other . This move by MoSt won’t really matter from a football standpoint in 5 years .

I … am open to this? Spice up the grind of Big Ten play with a tough neutral site test. Hopefully a weekend then!!
I agree. Assuming that the team is hitting it's stride by then, it presents a good opportunity for a Quad 1 win in the middle of the B1G stretch.

I wonder if the game will lineup with when the team is out on the east coast to play Rutgers.

There is a such thing as over scheduling. When bringing in an entirely new roster, not sure this is great. I know he wants to establish the "we'll play anyone at anytime" mentality, but maybe this wasn't the year to stack the schedule. This is one of those, just find a win somewhere and don't lose them all, scenarios.
Name checks out.

Every year is the year to stack the schedule with Q1 opportunities. Every. Year.
