"#Illini volleyball officially can take the court in its first match Jan. 22. The NCAA tournament will only have 48 teams, 32 automatic qualifiers and 16 at-large. NCAA Championship April 23-25"

Someone on this site said it before (can't find the post or I would've tagged it), but the similarities between the Hambly->Tamas and Self->Weber transitions are eerily similar. I dont follow volleyball a ton, but I haven't seen much on the recruiting side, disappointing to not be ranked either. Hopefully he can turn it around, but the downturn is concerning.

I think it's way too early to make that comparison

I think it's too early to say the conclusion will be the same. But it's hard to deny Hambly's recruits brought most of Tamas' current success.

But this is only his fourth season. Of course his first couple seasons would feature mostly Hambly recruits. Also, the elite volleyball recruits tend to commit very early in their high school careers, so it can take a few years to catch up with the top programs when you have a change of staff. Hambly didn't leave Tamas much in the way of commitments; Tamas basically had to start from scratch

I don't think its too early. If you look at their records, they are nearly directly on track with each other except Weber's 3rd year was better than Tamas 3rd year.

Each coach got to the Final 4 with the prior coach's players.
Each coach has struggled in recruiting/replacing the cogs from those Final 4 teams. O'brien saying she was done with volleyball, only to transfer to Texas to play for them is a huge red flag. Plus, the girl that came back from Auburn wasn't utilitized well at all last year. There's alot to be concerned with. Hambly was Bill Self level. And Tamas may indeed be Weber level

O'Brien is far and away the leader in digs for Texas at 3.63/set. The next girl is barely over 2. Texas is currently undefeated and ranked second in the country. Illinois, of course, isn't playing this fall but is not ranked in the current AVCA rankings which includes both teams that are playing fall ball and those who are not. Hambly's Stanford squad is ranked third. Wisconsin, with a roster sporting a lot of Illinois talent, is the top ranked team in the country.

I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. I watched highlights of the Wisconsin/Purdue match and almost every Wisconsin highlight featured either Rettke, Loberg, or Barnes. Not only does Wisconsin have a lot of Illinois players on their roster, but their most important players are from Illinois high schools.

People are criticizing Tamas' recruiting, but those are all players that Hambly whiffed on

Illinois hosts Wisconsin for 2 matches this weekend, today at 3pm (BTN+) and tomorrow at 11am (BTN).

After this weekend there will be 11 more matches in BTN+, compared to just 5 on BTN (might help some of you decide whether or not to subscribe to BTN+)

Illinois travels to #9 Penn State this weekend for 2 matches, 8 pm Friday (BTN) and 5:30 pm Saturday (BTN+)

PSU was scheduled to open the season last weekend at Michigan, but those matches were postpones due to Michigan's current Covid concerns.

Illinois lost 1-3 (20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 20-25) to #9 Penn State tonight. They battled hard but have always struggled in State College (now 3-26 at Rec Hall).

They announced during the broadcast that OH Ellie Holzman is out for the season with a torn ACL that she sustained during a match last weekend vs. Wisconsin.

Somewhere over the past couple of years, I remember that Tamas got the National HS Player of the Year. I'm not sure that I understand the recruiting comment.

Ellie Holzman (now out for the season) was Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year in 2018-19.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't aware that she was the same person as the injured player that you mentioned earlier. Ouch!!
