Illini Women's Basketball Allegations

IMO the Beckman settlement makes more sense to me than the women's basketball team settlement. Is there precedent for settlements among former players suing a university? Even more confusing to me is why Bollant would keep his job when the university is settling with the players. "We at the University admit to no wrong-doing, but we are going to pay the players $375k so they stop talking about it"

I have to admit I haven't followed this thing so I don't know much about it. But my understanding was two things (and maybe I misunderstood).

1). There was a lot of stuff found in the football program as far as players being forced to play hurt, which came back on Beckman. If that's the case, whey are we paying him?

2). There was no wrongdoing found in the women's basketball program. If that's the case, whey in the hell are we paying them???

Again, I obviously don't have all the facts. I just hope it's not a case of the university backing down too quickly like I feel it did with the Chief issue a few years ago.

Also, all those who received a penny in this "settlement" or whatever it was, I hope they are gone and not a part of the University of Illinois in any way.

I think this speaks highly of how assertively Josh Whitman is dealing with existing problems. BAM! Beckman. BAM! Womens BB. AFAIK, the last Chief outfit is still there on campus.

Anson Dorrance, the UNC Women's soccer coach, settled with two players accusing him of sexual harassment for $80,000 and agreed to eight years of counseling and he still has his job.

The settlement really has nothing to do with the merit of the allegations. The fact is, every headline about this case going forward is bad for the school, even if it's a pronouncement that the coaches are totally vindicated, because it just reminds everyone all over again that it happened. $375k to make this go away once and for all is an absolute bargain.

Legal fees alone could have surpassed that number quickly. It is best just to go away.

People want Groce gone but yet we keep Bollant...I don't get it! If you have to pay money to settle a lawsuit, how do you keep that coach around!

Funny how 250 k for Beckman is spun by the media as a loss for him (which it is) and 375 k split 7 ways is spun as a victory for the players (which it is not).

You are absolutely right in that this is a pittance to bring this to a close.
