Yeah. It's been off-record reported that Dug's GPA is between 1.8 and 2.0 and 1.8 is the minimum limit for NCAA participation. Now the assumption is that the 2.0GPA minimum might be a Michigan athletic requirement, and maybe it is, but I think it might actually be due to the other NCAA GPA requirement, which is that if you have a GPA under 2.0, you are required to submit an actionable "recovery plan" to get the student above that mark. While most legitimate schools would staple the kid to the study hall desk and accompany them to every single class as part of the recovery plan and bench them for the year, my guess is that Michigan submitted this ridiculous "no travel" recovery plan reminiscent of "grounding your teenager" by saying they can't leave the house until they get their grades up instead. And yes, Michigan is clearly allowing this to happen because Dug is their best player. I'd also be surprised if Michigan's actual academic standard for athletes wasn't even higher than a min 2.0 GPA, and that they're ignoring it out of convenience. And for the record, Illinois gpa requirements for athletes circa 2001-05 were much higher (I want to say that under a 3.0 was considered "probationary" and under a 2.5 was pretty much clean out your locker). That said, different times with Turner and Guenther in charge.
