JBo and Plummer will be an interesting matchup...I give Plummer the edge on pure scoring ability and Bohannon the edge in range. And Plummer may not be a lockdown defender, but he sure as heck has better footspeed than old man Bohannon. I expect him to get some layups in transition and put pressure on the Hawks frontcourt in halfcourt sets by driving the ball.
TF should be able to handle Toussaint just fine - and I like DMFW vs. Perkins matchup wise.
Kofi should have a big night assist-wise. It'll be interesting to see how Fran approaches him. If CoHawk can drop some early 3s, that's obviously going to make a huge difference.
I'm more worried about finding parking than anything else - should be a great game but my money is on the good guys to pick up a beautiful roadkill tonight.

I would be shocked if Trent wasn't on JBo all game. Toussaint can cause some issues, but he's not a game winner...JBo is.

With Iowa's size and athleticism, it might be a good time for Hutch to step up defensively if Plummer is struggling to stop Toussaint.

We are +2.5 in lines this game. So it will be a huge win for us not only because they are Iowa, but also this game could be a remarkable one in our profile.

I watched a video of mccaffrey at a coaches clinic a couple years ago and he talked about how they run their 1-2-2 based on who takes the ball out.

Basically, if a big or guard who isn’t a great handler is back with the primary point guard, they will shade the point of the press a little harder to the pg side, so he will reverse it. They won’t guard the other guy (other than the occasional stunt) until he gets to a trap zone. That’s why you see a lot of teams get stuck in between against it, because they kinda force the non pg in the situation to make the play.

I’ve adopted the approach for my high school team, and it’s pretty effective. I think Hawkins is the X factor in that secondary spot. He’s got decent enough handle, but also the height to see over the 6’8ish guy Iowa usually keeps up there.
Hey thanks for putting this up...kind of a junkie for X’s and O’s. So appreciate stuff like this quite a bit. It’s a good conservative little press to begin with; and this personnel-based wrinkle sounds interesting.

If I’m coaching against this I’m gonna put ‘em where they aint and run somebody
middle. Let’s say that happens…retreat mode?

Fairly or unfairly, Fran kinda gets a rep as being all about the offense and not-so much the defense. Roy Williams-similar perception…maybe a little surprising since he studied directly under THE Dean Smith all those years. (Sorry about the tangent there.) Fran currently has them playing the best D I’ve seen from them maybe ever.

Anyways, I like a 1-2-2…No one probably agrees but I wish we would put it back in ourselves, honestly. Underwood had some success with it here a couple years ago.

If we can't it's on BU. He knows it is coming so fore warned fore armed.
BU commented on this in his presser and after looking over the Marquette and Cincinnati game, I think he's right. A lot of our turnovers weren't even because of the press - they were unforced.

He/she has to protect his/her position.
While it does feed the rumors, we must understand that if 0440 gave us the full story it could damage 0440's job status.
It's not an injury, it's not discipline. What are the other possibilities?
Are we talking 0440's real life job status, or Loyalty job status?

I just have that sinking feeling in my stomach for tonight's game.
We are still missing our starting PG .........
The line has gone from -1 Iowa to -3 .......
Probably means their guy Murray is playing.......
This is 1st road game of BIG season......

Just get a bad feeling but I HOPE I am 100% wrong.
That's why they play the game.

I think you're missing the forest for the trees here. If you look at my posting history you'll note that I'm vocally a proponent of compensating NCAA athletes.

My point was that many on here have questioned whether we are making the most of NIL. This shows that our best players (at least) are getting things under this new paradigm.

I’m kind of holding out hope Belo comes back for the St Francis game on 12-18. By then the rest of the team should be beyond this flu big and we should win easily without him.

Will be almost 2 weeks additional time to heal, and will allow him to come back at home in a low pressure situation. St Francis, Mizzou, and Florida A&M for him to get right before conference play.

My hope.

Murray is good, but he's done most of it against some weak competition. (Look those up, theres a reason they're not ranked despite only 1 loss against Purdue) Virginia was the only real P5 that they've won, and Keegan had 18 and 9 that day. Still very good, but not outer space.

I'm thinking people saw the good comeback against Purdue and are going off on that. I watched it and was impressed, but more in awe that Purdue couldnt break the press. Eric Hunter on Purdue looked totally confused. But they were up 19 before that press comeback.

I think we can blitz this team. I have been wrong before. But we are pretty darn good too.

I'm most interested to see what kind of tempo we play at theses next 2 games. Iowa and Arizona both like to play fast. It might be in our best interest to slow it down, play more deliberately, and pound Kofi down low. Or do we try to run with them?

I'm thinking the same thing, it's just Marquette and Cinci are giving me PTSD. That said, those 2 teams had first year head coaches which is tougher to scout. I think BU knows how to beat Fran, and this Iowa team will drop to a 7 or 8 seed come March. Just up to the guys to execute. ILL!

I think what I will look for is once again is less turnovers. The Illini have turned it over at least once in the first two minutes of the game in the past 7 games (Rutgers being 2min10sec into the game but still). That’s a bad stat.

I’m with you on this one, deep. I do not feel good about this game for the reasons you mentioned (although I think Curbelo coming back first time in this game wouldn’t really be a huge boost either, as he’d still be getting his feet under him)

On the road in a hostile environment against a really hostile team. The shots will have to fall our way and Kofis gonna have to have an ENORMOUS night for us to win.
This might be one I skip watching live just to prevent the ulcers.

There are times I can't watch games lives because I drive myself crazy with worry and negative anticipation.
I'm a huge BEARS, BULLS, and other teams fan but for some reason I only have this issue with ILLINI basketball. Maybe I've been kicked in the nuts by ILLINI b ball too many times when I had high hopes.

Rewatched the last couple games and noticed much more intentional ball and player movement. The team can really start to develop some of that killer mentality tonight, hopefully on a fast ramp up to full potential. At this stage it feels like we are hovering around 35% of that full potential which can be argued to be expected given all the variables.

Hoping the Belo thing isn’t mental (not referring to concussion). Can appreciate the privacy around the young man’s personal situation. No matter what, hope it’s a quick and full recovery.

Ill - 72
IA - 70

No, it's not on BU. He can clipboard and coach how to break pressure in his sleep. They can practice each and every situation ad nauseum. There is no simulating game pressure, there is no simulating crowd noise, there's no simulating momentum, etc. and on the road, getting discombobulated under that pressure, is between the ears.

Handling pressure is on the guards. Don't run to a corner, don't try and dribble through pressure, yada, yada, yada. Basketball 101. Our guys(especially the Juniors and Seniors) know this and I'm sure BU has belabored the point.

BU is a cream of the crop head coach, but ultimately the players play.

Now, what does lie on BU is game management and having the right mix of guys out there. I don't like the thought of Plummer or DFW putting the ball on the deck. There's not a lot of options outside of TF, with AC being out.
