Loyola obviously left someone open every single time they double or triple teamed us.
I can't remember a single time we burned them.
Hopefully next season that doesn't happen nearly as often when we are doubled.
One more tall good 3 point shooter might be enough to do that.
I dont believe the issue with Loyola was lack of shooters.
I believe it's our offense that didn't value quick ball movements and less dribbling. We had guys who could shoot who were open, but we dribbled too much into traffic/doubles that stifled passing lanes.

IMO kofis passing got way better after the MSU game
Kofi did pass out more toward the end of the year. But it seemed to me to be a decision he made before he even got the ball, and not one based on what the defense was defending that particular entry. I hope he gets better at making that decision. The will is there, I think!

Is Mitchell actually a 4? Like is he quick enough for smaller 4s?

Loyola did there best imitation of MSU. Physical and pack it in. They fouled the crap out of Kofi and Our personnel in the lane but it was allowed by refs. MSU’s MO. Needed smart basketball. When a team is super physical and aggressive and their bench isn’t deep then get them into stupid niche fouls. Curbelo started to. Getting to the line at all in the first half would have gave as an Avenue to score when our guys couldn’t accurately get a 3 off. Having tall wings will help. The other thing is being able to body up in the lane and take advantage of it. If Loyola had 10 fouls in the first half Krusty the Clown & Co. would have had to play a little less aggressive/physical in 2nd half. We needed a little more gamesmanship.

For comparison:

Gonzaga: 30 games, 520 3-point shots, 36.5%
Illinois: 31 games, 524 3-point shots, 37.6%

I don't see anyone clamoring for Gonzaga to be shooting more 3 pointers. They have the most efficient offense in the country.

Great stat comparison!!
I'm guessing that playing with a 20 point lead at halftime of every game factors in a bit here. First half stats only might be interesting.

I was surprised when we could score at all that we didn’t bring in Coleman Hawkins. Tall, isn’t scored to body up down low and can shoot the 3. That seemed like a missed opportunity.

Our three point shooters had slow triggers as you make the point and which I have been saying. Not to knock any player here but teams dropped off Williams a lot which is why he did have a good percentage when he shot the ball. But he had to have time to shoot and defenders knew exactly how much to fall off so they can get back to defending him. I just am in the camp that believes we will be much more of a threat from 3 which will open the middle more. BU is coveting wings 6-6 and up for a reason.
Open shots are a sign of a good offense...we were good against many teams, but not all. Our goal on offense should always be to have an advantage on contested shots (kofi) or an open shot. Most good 3p teams set themselves up for open 3s.

Loyla watched the MSU game,
Loyola lucked into catching Illinois in the game that, for some reason, our staff and most of our team (Curbello and the late Mr Miller excepted) decided to phone in.
I’ve heard it suggested here that Loyola had “something to prove” against us. For the love of God, they’ve been to the Final Four since we’ve been in the tournament at all. We’re the team that should have had something to prove. Also, a deep run with Miller getting playing time probably sweetens his disposition.

This is so misleading

Gonzaga averaged 91 ppg
ILL averaged 80 ppg

Gonzaga opp averaged 68 ppg
ILL opp averaged 68 ppg

They had an average margin of victory of over 20 points

Better shooting would've helped ILL in their goal to get the ball inside to Kofi and take advantage of that

Gonzaga had a 45% 3pt shooter on their team and he made 83 of them while Trent made 55 for ILL but the biggest difference is that the Zags had more other guys who could make threes at just as high a clip as Ayo but also get to the ft line at nearly the same rate .

We had more guys who could shoot but they had more guys who could shoot and drive and thats why their offense ended up more efficient . You either have to be more well rounded or be better at the one dimension which does really play into the original comment of better shooting because offensively we had 2 guys playing major minutes whose offensive strength was shooting the ball.
