It's the leaving mid-season part that gets me. That's not Mathews.

That doesn't impact his talent level like you sort of suggested when you made the Legion comparison.

I don't love it either to be completely honest but the norm in college basketball is quickly changing this would have far more alarming even 5 years ago... Today not so much.

If you're in an unsustainable situation, why should you be expected to stick with it?
I'm not going to pretend to know the situation. But I don't know what you mean by "unsustainable". Any time a player walks out on his team midseason, it's going to give me pause.

I guess my primary point is that the buzz around Burnett is more about his high school career and I'm not very confident that it will play out as well as many here seem to think. Charles Matthews isn't actually a bad example. Nice career at Michigan but I feel like the Burnett hype on the board makes it seem like they expect far more than the Matthews career.

This is pretty much the case with all transfers and freshmen. Lots of excess enthusiasm.

Don’t really believe that any new players will start over existing roster. The only possibility I see is a big transfer who is bigger than Giorgi. Ace, Belo, Grandy, Hawk, and Giorgi are pretty solid and all have system experience. Guess I would be glad to be proven wrong because it would mean adding excellent talent.

How can we not get a few of these top recruits after beating OSU? Who's next to commit? These commitments should go fast...

Ha ha. Hoping we get some of these guys that we have been taking about on the board.

So my only question is would Burnett, TyTy, Hardy, Krutwig, and Bona all be willing to play together?

Or maybe would Burnett and TyTy be willing to play together with Curbelo and Miller already on the roster?

I can't speak for him, but it seems the transfer portal for both sports are seeing a major spike in #s, he decided it wasn't going to happen there so move on. But understand flags.

BU and staff are showing that you can win at the highest level at Illinois and develop into an NBA talent. Also showing you will play with other good players who want to win. We have lost numerous instate players the last 12 years because we couldn't communicate this to recruits.

Nice to bring along some extra "staff" when talking to recruits to help with that communication: lots of wins.

It's most likely that if Burnett comes here he will be a good contributor to next year's team.

But we're on an IL recruiting message board...of course there's going to be people over-stimulated from the orange kool-aide.

What will be extremely important next year is leadership and chemistry. Ayo, Trent and DMW have provided this and likely all 3 will be gone.

Can see BU going after a couple grad transfers who are more interested in winning than personal stats.

Believe that BU and staff have a lot of interest from high school players and further opportunities with the transfer portal. April/May will be interesting.

Not as interesting as March. 😀

Hoping we can leverage this year's success (and hopefully a long NCAA tourney run) over the course of the next recruiting year. I recall waiting and waiting in 2005-06 and Weber never could deliver a big class.

As of right now, we're essentially "missing in action" when it comes to the Top 100 for next fall's class (Goode). Will be indeed watching April/May/June closely.
247 has Melendez's composite at 97. And rising.

I believe 24/7 has Melendez top 100 too. In fact, don’t he and Goode have almost identical rankings? But I get your point. I’ve basically given up trying to figure why recruits pick one school over others or why BU hasn’t reeled in a top 50 recruit for 2021. I have faith he’ll put together at least a very good class when all is said and done. I do wonder if it has anything to do with the style of the team — strong emphasis on D and except for the alpha dog(s) it is D that earns you playing time (and no, I’m not saying Ayo and Kofi aren’t good defensively). I do think that the 3 games without Ayo might benefit recruiting. Large part of the emphasis on offense this year has been Ayo and Kofi — and rightfully so. When Ayo was out, it might be easier to see how the offense could work without Ayo and that it could be effective.

Underwood hasn't had a lot to sell until this year. No one cares about what you did at Stephen F Austin and recruits are often not fans of the school. They do their research but they don't look at everything through orange and blue tinted glasses.

Underwood now has something to sell. He can point to giving freshmen big minutes, he can point to a #1 seed, he can point to big wins, putting guys in the NBA, showing development in players and hopefully a long tournament run.

Top recruits typically want to win and play in the NBA. The better your track record in those 2 departments, the better your recruiting will be.

Other than that, it comes down to how relatable you are to kids. Will never forget the words of chainsaw. Coach Self is the type who will put his arm around you and talk to you about your girlfriend, Coach Weber is like your math teacher. Not shocking their recruiting prowess is vastly different.

Agree. But I sure see a lot of positive leadership in Curbelo.

Illinois was one of 3 programs to get multiple guards in the top 60 of the 2020 recruiting class. I think it was us, Duke and UNC. He’s already delivered a “big class” and it’s obviously paying off. We’ve got big time offers out in 2022 and a lot of them. IMO we’ll cash in big in 2022

We’re in an unprecedented and bizarre recruiting cycle where many of the kids being targeted (and their parents) haven’t been able to set foot on campus or meet the coaches in person. Let’s see what happens over the coming months.
