Did you ever think it might be a players decision to leave. Maybe you think coach should tell them they might play when they wont. Let them rot on the bench. Joel you"re a lot more patient than I am. What are they thinking. Everybody likes sitting for 4 years good gawd.

Creaning is basically pulling a scholarship, not “you are not likely to get minutes here going forward and while we appreciate your contributions you may want to consider alternatives”. Calling the Hamlin situation a Creaning without some evidence is not a good look. These are not the same things.
Nowadays there is no scholarship pulling. They are guaranteed for 4 years unless you violate school policies or rules. Kids leave now semi-voluntarily if they want to play and don't see it in their future they move on.

Thinking we're in for a bit of a lull here, WRT the portal. But with AAU ball ramping up, there's still plenty of material to digest. Love that we're laying down markers for '22, '23 and '24. So much nicer than being in scramble mode.
And for '22 it's not like we got two no bodies, either. Storr and Bass could both be pushing Top 50 by the time the summer circuit is done.

Hopefully the days of getting strung along and left with nothing are over.

Seeing the updated ESPN rankings reminded me of how disappointed I am about Max Christie going to East Lansing.

If I'm Kofi ill work on a mid range game this year. Try to be a Vuc type nba player. Vuc isn't the fastest player but he's strong and he can shoot mostly anywhere on the floor. Luckily for Kofi he's faster than Vuc but has no where near the offensive game.

I'm excited to see what he's does next year, hopefully improved his free throw shooting

I’m sorry to do this to ya, but that is a terrible comp for Kofi.

Kofi will make the NBA by vast improvement in perimeter defense, and becoming a shot blocking presence. He doesn’t have the foot speed or shooting stroke like Vuc. I doubt he ever will either.

Working on passing out of double teams and at least having to be guarded 15’ from the rim would be huge as well.

He is one of those players that doesn’t translate to the NBA, as many others have said. I could be wrong, and I hope he finds a niche. He’s an absolute monster at this level though.

He is also the same age as the big Kid from Kansas a year or two ago right now.

I predict that he will ultimately be disappointed in that decision, too.
I’ve seen him play against my son’s team a few times. Definitely doesn’t fit the Spartan mold. Extremely smooth and athletic. Sneaky fast. Awesome in the open court. Not a clogged, half court banger by any stretch.

I'm pretty sure, for like a split second, Jermaine was rocking the finest mutton-chop sideburns I've ever seen (or at least in decades) on an Illini basketball player. Best of luck, Mr. Hamlin. Thanks for your Illini years. Seems like a quality teammate and human being.
EDIT: this is not a shot of his sideburns at their peak...no luck with the google machines

pretty sure you make more money there than at college
Staying another year and going in the NBA first round would be equal to about 6 years of pay in the G league.

I watched my fair share of Illini BBall mostly when coach Combs was the man in charge
with Skip Thoren, Bogie Redmon, Don Freeman, Dave Downey, et. al. I met and would briefly chat once in awhile with Preston Person then an Illini bball player.

My first Illini basketball game at Assembly Hall must have been 1st or 2nd year it opened. I was maybe 8 at the time - Skip Thoren, Bogie Redmon, Don Freeman, Bill Small IIRC. - my dad saw Dave Downey and he got me is autograph so it must have been the year after he graduated. Either ‘64-‘64 or ‘64-‘65. I thought I died and gone to heaven. Those mimeographed programs and keeping point totals for each player...

I worked with Preston Pearson's son when I lived in Dallas.
