I think state loyalty is an afterthought, at most. Fans love to bring it up, but recruits aren't thinking about it. They're picking the program that they feel is best for them. And the criteria for making selections is hardly uniform.

WRT to Iowa, it's pretty easy to see why Schutt is considering them.
Lots of shots, and sometimes questionable dedication to defense would sound pretty appealing to a lot of shooters / scorers. I'm guessing Fran isn't even all that awful when he's not coaching at game time. Probably puts on a real nice face for recruiting.

Schutt and Wieskamp are virtually the same prospect coming out of HS. They have similar height and weight, great shooters, similar athleticism. I’m going to guess Schutt ends up around the same ranking as Wieskamp which was #60 on 247. I’m sure that is what Fran is selling. I’m going to guess it doesn’t work.

What’s with all of the Fran/Iowa love around here today? This isn’t who we are as a board.

I dislike Fran as much as anyone, but this is the same shpeal other fanbases had about us last year. "Underwood lucked out with 2 All Americans blah blah". Neither Weiskamp nor Garza were surefire NBA/NPOY types a few years ago. They recruited and developed those guys. Fran (begrudgingly) gets credit where it's due.
Does Fran get some credit for Garza? Sure. But my point in saying he lucked into having a NPOY is that it’s very, very unlikely for a sub-100 player make it to NPOY. Almost all at that rating simply lack the ability and hitting on a NPOY at that rating is fairly lucky.

Is it lucky as well that Ayo and Kofi developed into AA’s? Sure, but the odds of top 50 players who stick around 2-3 years achieving AA status are much higher than a sub-100 player turning into the best player in CBB. It’s like a 10-1 bet paying off vs a 100-1 bet.

And in any event, sort of obscured my point that last year may have been the most talented roster Fran will have at Iowa, and he didn’t do that much with it. Best win was at tOSU, which isn’t nothing, but they were usually run off the floor by talented teams because they couldn’t get stops.

Did we stub our toe in the NCAAT? Sure. But if you think our ceiling as a program is the same as Iowa’s, I don’t know what to tell you. We look primed to contend for BIG titles and make deep tourney runs like we did in the early 2000s. And judging by interest/visits, most recruits are seeing the same thing.

I don't disagree but it seems like Schutt has a muuuuccchhhh faster release and Wieskamp
