I know there's also a lot of Illinois high school basketball fans on this forum, and some of us with kids who play high school basketball, depressing news here. I think the IHSA will come out with more guidelines tomorrow but sounds like the season is on hold until mid-January at the earliest. (was supposed to start Nov. 16) The IDPH moving basketball from a medium risk to high risk sport really makes it seem doubtful there will be any season. After a fall when basically every state around us played football, volleyball and soccer while Illinois kids sat out, it looks like the same thing is going to happen this winter with basketball. Feel terrible for all the kids who have worked for this moment their whole lives...obviously you can't get it back.

I don’t believe they would do it, but it makes you wonder if the state could try to stop College basketball.

They haven’t stopped college football, and the players at the college level are not minors. I think it’s unlikely they do anything to our basketball team.

In Texas we start practice tomorrow. Girls started last week. Im hoping everything turns out okay here. El Paso issued a shutdown because they were apparently at 100% capacity on hospital beds, including icu.

Near me we’ve had a school’s full fall athletic program shut down for 2 weeks, a volleyball team, and the full cheerleading program at our rival high school. I think the UIL (texas ihsa) and our local districts have done a pretty good job so far. Volleyball girls play games with their masks on. Basketball we won’t be. Hopefully it will be fine.

" As a part of the mitigation plan, masks will be worn by all players, coaches, and officials during play "

That part can't be real, can it?

I feel oxygen starved when I’m sitting in a work meeting having casual conversations.

I can’t imagine doing strenuous activity. Kids are gonna pass out. (At least I know I would)

They have been having "contact days" in Sept and Oct at most schools, and kids are required to wear masks the entire time. They scrimmage in them, run up and down the court, etc. They get knocked off sometimes or slide down. The thought of playing basketball in a mask seems really difficult to me. Most of the players I've talked to really dislike wearing them while they play but they say it's better than no basketball season at all.

ISBE is going to back the Governor and tell schools they can not play unless they want to lose funding and other things from the state. Of course the State Supt of Schools was appointed by JB himself, go figure. My opinion is high school basketball will NOT be playing this season, which really stinks for the kids.

In regards to the mask during play thing, I don't think it's as big of a deal as it's made out to be. It definitely sucks, but I have a hard time thinking that it's going to negatively impact a players health. Will they get winded a little more easily? Perhaps. Is it necessary to try to prevent transmission in a physical sport? Yes, I believe so. I see runners here in Baltimore wearing masks all the time, some never take them off while on the run so high cardio activity can be done in a mask. It says "during play", so during "media time outs" the players can take them off, which would help. I'm sure the schools will get kids masks from athletic apparel companies like UA, Nike, etc that are made for more athletic activity.

It's not apples to apples as it's not as high cardio 99% of the time, but I play in a slow pitch softball league where we have to wear masks. I forget I even have it on most of the time during gameplay and it's not a high quality mask like UA, Nike, etc. If the kids practice in them and get used to them I don't think it'll impact them much. I just hope it gets worked out and the kids get to play (safely).

Not a great comparison, but in Michigan I've seen Volleyball players play entire matches in masks. Once again, the kids hate it, but adapt pretty quickly.

Not to be rude, volleyball and slow pitch softball :ROFLMAO: are not even in the same ballpark as basketball when it comes to wearing masks. Our boys go up and down for 2 minutes and our best athletes are gassed. What about the kid that has the heart condition nobody has diagnosed yet, when he goes down who is that on? Is the coach taking it, school district, parents?? Absolutely silly and not necessary.

The undiagnosed heart defect would be the reason, not the mask, and it would be regarded as a faultless tragedy as it would be in any other time.

EDIT: Most medical experts agree that wearing a face mask is merely inconvenient when it comes to physical activity, not inherently dangerous. It will feel similar to exercising/training at higher altitudes and people need to listen to their bodies, but that could be said of any form of exercise.

Your desire to protect the particularly vulnerable is admirable. But doing so in a way that substantially increases the risks to everyone else isn't pragmatic.

That's why I said it wasn't a great comparison.

Runners wear a mask, so if a player is gassed running up and down the court... get in better shape.

if you wore a nose guard with a piece of fabric hanging off the bottom so that it wasn’t secured to you at the bottom would that work? It would allow a lot more airflow but still keep you from directly breathing onto others.

They make a plastic cage that sits below cloth masks and keep them from sticking to your nose/mouth while breathing. Those might be an option, but I'm not sure what would happen if a kid took an accidental hit to the face.

that’s why I was thinking about the face guards specifically designed to play basketball in.

Those may still sit too close to the face. You might get the game issue with the cloth sticking to the nose/mouth on each inhale depending on how hard the athlete is breathing.

Go to your local gym and run up and down the floor fast for 8 min in a mask, please also send us the video. Trust me, kids aren't in the best shape yet b/c its not easy to breathe so there has been less running at workouts, but to say its just inconvenient is ridiculous. Personally I think they should play with no masks but don't see that happening either.

As someone who isn't in great shape but has been to the gym during this time and had to wear a mask, I managed to jog for 30 minutes in a mask, then go through my weight lifting routine.

Did it suck? Yes. Was it impossible? No. Was it cheaper than getting sick? Absolutely.

High schools can't afford the testing programs colleges can. It's masks or no season. Take your pick.
