Of all the games Illinois has played this year, this is the most important one for them to have a strong start. If they are sloppy with the ball and ISU gets some turnovers and fast break points at the beginning, this could turn into a blood in the water feeding frenzy. On the other hand, if they are strong with the ball and are scoring at a good clip in a variety of ways (DD down low, booty ball, Coleman 3's, TSJ everything) that could demoralize ISU and really pressure their offense. The first five minutes may well determine the tenor of the whole game.
I expect a close, high level game that should have been an Elite 8 or Final 4 game, not a Sweet 16 game.

Does anyone know if TBS is one of the live channels on Delta? Will be in the air when the game is happening.

I have two children, one went to Iowa State and one went (goes) to Iowa. No judgement please, I largely let them make their own choices and there were financial considerations as well.

So I have lived the Iowa / ISU fan experience for the past seven years. I was very surprised when I learned that a heat map of Iowa citizen's fan support was something like 75% Iowa, 20% ISU, and 5% UNI. The only area I found ISU with a superiority complex was in STEM. Everywhere else they are Iowa's little brother, even when geographically very close to Ames.
Thought ISU was better at Ag?

Only way this would’ve been an Elite game against us is if Iowa State was a 1 seed, or if you would’ve had us rather play UConn, NC, Houston, or Purdue this round.

have you seen Iowa St (and Houston) play? On Defense they mug guys. If called tightly, Illinois wins easily!!! If called like the rest of the NCAAT - this will likely be a last possession game.
IMO that was what made Wiscy the numbers darling on KenPom every year; which he even said he couldn’t explain. Refs can’t call fouls on everything they should when there is a foul happening in every 10 seconds while a team is defending. It’s like forcing their hand on how tight they will call the game.

It’s a part of why Wiscy has had significantly less success in the tourney, besides the Kaminsky years because those teams were legitimately good, than they should have based on efficiency numbers.

Hopefully we get the crew that did the Houston vs Texas A&M game then.

Something I'm interested in is how this game puts to the test BU's current philosophy regarding what is most likely to generate success in the tourney: stout defense or blistering offense. But starting this year, I've heard him talk about how he's switched over to believing that scoring points is the key to tourney success.
There is no question in my mind, that this team, or any team of their ilk that have 5 guys that can score against anyone or in the case of our Illini, three dependable scorers of which any one of them can and have scored 30, has a better chance of winning in the Dance due to being able to avert thos 5-6 min. scoring droughts we came to know and accept in recent years. It sure has kept the pressure on opponents to do the same with several different lineups and none has been able to recently. Bringing scorers like DD, Luke, and Harmon off the bench and you have 8 deep that are a threat to aggressively get points in bunches at any time....and quickly.

I know we have had a drought or two this season, but in previous seasons that has been per game. For most teams it is really hard to keep up. UConn might be able to though.....along with a handful of others if they are on. Having a mindset to defend your way to the title is fool's gold...you have to do it on both ends for 40 min. to win the next four.

There’s no one.. and I mean no one… on ISU who can stop Terrence.
Duquesne did as good of a job as anyone this year in trying to keep him from getting through to the rim...and yet he was successful far more than they imagined was possible. Not saying no one can stop TSJr. from driving....but there has to be a first. No one has seen or tried to handle his talent at getting downhill and to the line which in a win or go home tourney is so important. He can be slowed down...as the Dukes did as well as anyone....but he still got 19 in the first half!!! It will also be interesting to see how successful ISU is in handling DD and Doc.

Must disagree a slightly with some of the comments. Any player can be stopped. It’s how you handle it which determines the outcome. If either Shannon or Domask get going expect lots of traps and quick doubles. Must make the right decision when/if that happens. The rest of the team move to open positions when their man doubles. Must make the right read even if you don’t score.

The officials will play a big part in this game, most good defensive teams are really just good at grabbing the opponent discretely. If this is allowed we could be in trouble. That Texas A&M / Houston game was brutal. Must hit free throws if they play a foul game.

There was an early play against Duquesne that worried me until the next play. They had someone at half court who was in position for where tsj streaks down the floor. That kind of threw him off but I didn’t see it again or it didn’t work.

We have had the Dain game, most are tsj games, doc has been playing well, but this could turn into a Goode game if they post trap on doc.

Yeah they had dudes staggered where he catches the outlet and at half court trying to slow him down

This breakdown boosts my confidence. Seems like the game's gonna come down to our ability to make the extra pass/skip pass, shoot threes at a good %, and O-rebound. C'monnn!
That was a good breakdown- I agree with his take that if Coleman is setting the high ball screen he will be the key outlet to get the ball back from the dribbler and then it’s up to him to find the right man and facilitate or drive himself. Domask will have to make the right pass when they double him in his post ups as well- if Domask and Coleman are making the right reads and getting it to shooters in the pocket or down low to Dain, that will be the key to our offense - I don’t think they will allow Domask booty ball so we’ll need to score in other ways (which we know we are capable of)

Completely delusional bunch. Blows my mind how much more reasonable our fans are being in preparation for this one. VERY few fans here have not had a healthy respect for this ISU team going into this one. Meanwhile, they act like we are some upstart and they are this elite program. Again, all-time it's a bloodbath, as they have no real tradition to speak of. But even just in the last five years...

Record: ILL 116-48 (.707), ISU 84-76 (.525)
NCAAT Appearances: ILL 4, ISU 3
Sweet Sixteens: ILL 1, ISU 1
Second Round Appearances: ILL 3, ISU 2
Conference Championships: ILL 3 (1 regular season, 2 tournament), ISU 1 (0 regular season, 1 tournament)
Losing Seasons: ILL 0, ISU 2
AP Poll Finishes: ILL 4, ISU 1
---> ILL: #21 - #2 - #19 - NR - #10
---> ISU: NR - NR - NR - NR - #4

But they were better than us when John Groce was here back in 2017 ... congrats?? Their sense of entitlement HAS to be from some hangers-on status as a "Big XII program," right?? :ROFLMAO: Status by way of being in the same league as Kansas, Baylor, Houston, etc.?! The only way I can wrap my mind around why they are SO confident that their #2 seed team will easily handle our #3 seed team is a religious-like devotion to the belief that the Big Ten is THAT bad that even their top 10 teams are just mediocre. Guess we'll see!
