Another thing that doesn't really bother me is the "home court" in Boston. This is a veteran Illinois team who has played in a number of very hostile environments over the past couple of seasons. I'm watching the replay of the UConn game from last night right now. It was loud, but no louder than what Illinois has experienced in East Lansing, Madison, or even at Rec Hall in State College.

I do not expect Illinois to be overwhelmed by the moment of the environment. The game will be decided by the players and coaches on the court.

I said that right after our comeback win vs Az. I thought we were destined.
it didnt turn out that way

that said , while I don’t have that feeling today , I might get it again if we beat UConn tomorrow night .

this is fun again
North Carolina was the only team I didn't think we could beat that year. Sadly, no one knocked them out earlier. Thankfully that is still a season that I will always remember and love. It's so easy to lose on the road and get upset in the tournament. To go 32-1, and then beat everyone until we played the one team that was better than us is remarkable.

If I tell you, people will post mean SNL memes about me
All in jest. For the record I agree they are a nightmare matchup for most. Orange colored glasses aside I think we matchup well. The biggest issue is the matchup at center. I think we have to take first half Purdue a few weeks ago and duplicate that for 40+. Not switch to doubling the post at the half like we did there.

I know, I'm just goofin' as well.

I like our chances to, and really expect us to, give them more of a sweat than they've had in this tourney run. We're so varied in the things we can do on offense and adapt to games as they go, we are not a team that's going to just fold up the tent if Plan A doesn't work.

I believe we can be right in this game in crunch time. Can we get the stops we need at that point? Well....

We're counting on the new pressure of that tense moment to make UConn a lesser team. That's possible. Creighton did that to them, as that game started slipping away they got kinda desperate and sloppy and Creighton made them pay over and over.

We'll see. I dig the challenge. And the pressure is all on them.

Who else thinks we should rock chief jerseys Thursday? Media is against Illinois because of the TSJ situation, so why not?

Can we please retire this statement in general? It has come up on virtually every thread, and it is simply not true. There will always be some in the media who are rude in the way they ask questions, but I have not found the "media" being against the Illini because of TSJ. I believe Illinois is handling the situation very well, and the media, by in large, is handling their job the way they should.

Just like in any field of work, there are people who think their s*** doesn't stink and they expect people to just cave to their whims. Those people are the ones complaining about TSJ's lack of availability.

That the principal culprit works for a big-city newspaper doesn't surprise me in the least. A lot of people end up working for the big-city media outlets by being the media version of Dan Hurley. Can't really argue with the final result, but only they can live with how they have chosen the path to those achievements.

Uconn fan here , I have a few friends who are big Illinois fans and we've been talking all morning about tomorrow's game. Over on the Boneyard message board there is a ton of more detailed conversations about particular matchups. There's also a ton of respect given to your boys , they deserve it. I think Illinois is on the brink of making history if they pull this out . UConn is the number one overall seed , looking for back to back championships , has a record 9 straight tournament victories by over 13 points , have 2 lottery picks , an all American , Big East freshman of the year who's a heck of a defender and the Big East sixth man award winner. Here's why I think Illinois wins. You have the size to match Uconn at every position , great 1 2 punch at center position ( which Uconn had last year) , shooters, Shannon is playing other worldly and I can't see anyone stopping him. Underwood is a phenomenal coach and your fan base was by far the loudest last night. Fan bases get that way when they're hungry. What's even scarier is last night you guys had probably the worst free throw shooting performance I've ever seen in basketball, you weren't great from three and Domask had a pretty rough game and yet you guys still beat the number six or seven team in the country on a neutral court. If you guys make free throws and a few threes that's a 20 point game. It is true that UConn does not play very many close games and over on the boneyard that's a big topic of discussion that Hurley can't win close games or this team or last year's team couldn't win close games and Hurley's response to that is well. That's why we blow people out. Now I do love his confidence but that trend cannot continue forever and I think this Illinois game is going to show what this Connecticut team is made of. Now why I think UConn will win - Well, they have all the weapons. Basically everyone on the team is a double digit scorer. Everyone can rebound ,all American guard who led them to a championship last year. Cam Spencer who arguably is the best transfer get in all college basketball, a tenacious 6th man defender who's offensive game is just starting to round out pretty nicely and a coach who knows how to keep these kids motivated. UConn truly is a well-oiled machine but sometimes well-oiled machines have technical difficulties and when that happens , a newer better model steps up and becomes the well-oiled machine. We'll see you tomorrow night !

Now this is the type of opposing fan who we can talk to. All good points. Obviously, we all have a huge amount of respect for UConn. It would be a big upset for Illinois, but nothing's off the table right now. But man, UConn is humming. It's been a while since I've seen a college basketball team with this combination of talent, execution, and effort. Even in that first round game, I was impressed at how UConn was acting like they were down 6 to St. John's at the Garden instead of being up 25 to some no-name school.

My initial scouting report thoughts on the game is that both of these teams aren't used to facing an opponent as big and athletic as they are. Them handling that worse than us is the path to making them look more ordinary than usual.

But also, with the way UConn cuts and passes and attacks their way into the paint, and our bad habit of being passive and foul-averse in those situations, it's not immediately clear how we're going to stop them from scoring a zillion points in this game.
I am not super optimistic about our paint defense, either. I hope we can at least take away their 3 pt shooting and try to outgun them.
