Very interesting, and I enjoyed reading this. But my question is (and I am not being disrespectful), did that national title in basketball not count? I have always heard that Illinois is arguably the best basketball program that has never won a national championship. Was that championship considered too old? I know that things were a lot different back then. For instance, there was no end-of-season tournament to determine the national champion (started 1939). Is that the difference when they say Illinois has not won a national championship, that is, Illinois has not won a national championship by winning the NCAA tournament?
Yes, it was before an end of season tournament to declare a championship. Schools do claim national championships for those early years (including Illinois for 1915 - LINK ), typically with an asterisk based on a retroactive determination by the Helms Athletic Foundation or the Premo-Porretta power poll. Illinois was the winner for 1915 by both the Helms Foundation and the Premo-Porretta power poll, so can claim one basketball national championship but has never won the NCAA tournament.

AI background: "The Premo-Porretta Power Poll and the Helms Foundation are two different entities that recognized national champions in college basketball, particularly before the NCAA Tournament became the primary decider of a national champion. The Helms Foundation (later Helms Athletic Foundation) was an organization that retroactively selected champions from the early 20th century and continued to name contemporary champions in later years. The Premo-Porretta Power Poll, created by historians Dick Premo and Ken Porretta, aimed to fill the gap before the first major polls existed by compiling game scores and data to rank multiple teams for each season and determine a mythical champion, continuing this process from 1895–96 through 1947–48. "

As to parking does anyone have experience parking in some of those private lots west of the McDonalds on Kirby? Never tried it but I come from the west & may try it this weekend. Parked in the VET MED lot for WIU & it was a journey getting back after the game.

You won't have any issues with the Champaign Chamber of Commerce building (and adjacent Murry Wise auction house property) parking. They typically let the Champaign/Urbana boys & girls clubs do a $10 fundraiser to park there on game days. Not a bad walk to the stadium, about the same as Vet Med but way closer to the main tailgate areas west of the stadium.

Also much easier exit after the game - getting across Neil St. is always the hardest part of exiting any U of I sports game heading west.

Yes, exactly -- and similar to the Chicago Bears having 9 NFL titles, and yet only 1 Super Bowl championship.

Prior to1939 & even for a while after, the NIT was considered a bigger tournament to win. The NIT actually started a year before the NCAA tourney. IL never won that one either so has never won a post season hoops tourney (other than BTT a few times).

I would add 1989 - Final Four, Citrus Bowl and 1990 shared Big Ten Football title. They’ve been fleeting

In my opinion no one has built a more solid program in our modern history than Bret is. This is built to last. He is our version of Hayden Fry/Barry Alvarez and incidentally tied to that coaching tree.

Going to be staying in Dingle Sept 17 at the Greenmount House. Are you going to be there on that day? Maybe we can have a stout together. I am with my wife and another couple who are good friends.

There are two banks on Niel st. Got to get there early. One bank is for a local high school band program. My son said for the Western Ill game they weren't there for the bank further away from gameday spirit. Maybe they had a hs football game that night.

First game of the year this season and my wife is telling me parking has changed... We have parked at Research Park mainly but it's saying that lot is sold out... Can anyone help guide us in a good direction on this?

We're headed down in the am so our son can do the Ayo basketball camp, so will be there all day!
I don't believe it's sold out. Per the Parking Information page, it's available for gameday parking on a first come, first serve basis. I parked there for week 1, no parking pass, and had no issues.

I've been waiting for years to see someone refer to him as 'Mr Beatty'.

Just so I can say, "You don't have to call him Mr., Mister. The whole world calls him Hank".

It's not that funny, I know. But how often do I get to reference a David Allen Coe song in here?
love this

If this team figures out the run/pass balance (this is code for moar ValenTIME) and pass protection....with Luke improving on his reads...

Look. Out.

If Valentine was better in pass pro he would be the starter. I suspect as the season goes on if he continues to put effort there it will be harder to keep him off the field.

I would just like to see us stick with the same guy in the backfield for a little longer though...

I understand they all have different styles and strengths but I do think sometimes we need to just let them go.

I park at first federal. It’s a good price and easy walk to lot 31

I sometimes think we run way too much on first downs early in the games but then I keep watching us roll over worn out defenses in the 4th quarter & realize a little more each week Bret is much smarter than me. One fear is these slow starts eventually digging us a big hole in a game & then the wear em down to dominate late strategy goes out the window. It is so unusual to watch an Illini team get to the 4th quarter & kind of expect them to go on a long slow clock eating drive to salt the game away. Like Duke & the bowl game last year. At the end, SC defense was dead. We were gonna score every time we touched the ball if need be.
