IFJW is going to make a change at the end of the season, why not just pull the trigger now? I don’t care that Lovie is the DC- if he’s gonna be gone at the end of the season I don’t see how it doesn’t make sense to go ahead and pull the trigger now.

Great 1st Q. Overmatched physically rest of the game.

Killer beat if you took the Under 52. 28-14 with 2 minutes left. Iowa would have kneeled it had Illinois just not allowed a TD. Then Iowa gives up 7 with 25 secs left. If you took the over, what a miracle

I dont understand how JW can watch this week in and week out and think we are progressing.
I think I'm at the point of this now being a test for JW and whether or not he can lead a successful fb program. If he thinks this is acceptable and deserves to continue, then he no longer deserves support either.

What coaches can we realistically get to Champaign? I’m really disappointed that Lovie isn‘t working out.

I don’t know how realistic it is, but I’d go after Bret Bielema. 3 Rose Bowls at Wisconsin. Well known among HS coaches in Illinois. He was rumored to take the Southern Miss job but another guy got it. I think could put implenent the same things at Illinois that worked at Wisconsin. Probably bring in a strong staff underneath him given his college connections. He was out of his element in the SEC but I think he’d be successful again in the Big 10. Still only 50 years old. Probably motivated to show he can still do a good job bc his departure from WI was bumpy and Barry Alvarez still gets the credit for what Bielema accomplished,

I would rather have a younger more high energy guy who can recruit

Wow! I would say they played pretty well today except the offense went dead and the defense suffered more injuries again... 3 like what I saw to start the game... just need consistency from this team... game plan seemed well designed... just gotta get some more talent and size in the trenches... big nasties..

I missed the second half, but I don't feel like I missed anything. It's like groundhog day every stinking year with this program.

Time for the coaching carousel thread to heat back up again!

Iowa has more good players and better coaching. Unlike our 2 previous opponents they didn't make any glaring mistakes. Predictable result based on that.

Bielema is the exact opposite of what we need in a new coach.

Lovie teams don’t fare well when they’re not creating turnovers. Teams like Iowa are generally pretty sound in ball security. No surprise today with the result.

I was thinking earlier today about games I saw in the '80s and how, except for '86 and '87, the Illini were entertaining, dynamic and relevant for the entire White/Mackovic 1981-91 period. And now, except for a couple outlier Zook years, it has been nearly unabated misery since the 2001 season ended.

That's 19 freaking seasons.

I have faith (and hope) that JW will bring in someone young and dynamic who realizes the similar potential in the program that existed when White finally lifted us out of the Valek/Blackman/Moeller morass. An order of magnitude more faith than I ever had in Guenther and (*gack*) Thomas. There's no reason that what began to happen at Wisconsin beginning in 1990 under Alvarez can't happen here. Absolutely no reason. At Wisconsin it all came about because of a savvy AD hire. JW can be the man. But we've still got at least another 2-3 horrible seasons ahead of us before the ship turns around, if it does.

Most of all, I feel badly for the young men currently playing, particularly those seniors who played their final game in the empty stadium today. They all deserve better. This year already sucks enough as it is. My heart breaks for those guys.

On to NW.

So that just showcased how awful Lovie is. Extremely frustrating after a nice start, but Kirk made adjustments while we stood there. Time for an overhaul.

Beat Duke?

I try getting excited about a football game and remember why I only watch the basketball games.

Maybe next year.

Many of us are old (or older), and remember some great years (controversies and all). I am not sure the option now, we just can't gain tractions.

I came to Illinois the year after the 83-84 Rose Bow team, so I missed the best of times, but even on probation, an exciting team and 70,000+ every game was awesome. And we had Lou and all that was going on with B-Ball. Was working on my master's during the Flying Illini Final Four. Maybe not everyone's thing, but the volleyball team was awesome and the club hockey team was a blast. Miss those days. So much fun. Hope the kids at school now can enjoy b-ball this year and get caught up in some exciting times down the road. Tough now for everyone. But I still sing Illinois Loyalty, Oskee-wow-wow, and the Illinois March. Made my kids learn them, even though they both went to UVA. Anyway - I-L-L...

Peters has an arm, but no touch, and tries to force throws.. doesn’t check down ever to the back in the flat..I thought zook special teams were something but we have a kicker catching punts now?
