with all the better metrics that are out there to evaluate perfomance of a coach, leave it to Iowa to use
a. wins &
b. points per game,

as if its year 1954 and thats all they have access to
It's almost as if they're trying to look like they're doing something, without actually doing anything.

Aww, that’s very perceptive.

They’re demanding results at least equivalent to what he’s delivered so far, 7 wins and 25 points per game, his 6 year average. A further decline from their 115th ranked offense will NOT be tolerated! Of course a further decline is also impossible.

I won't root for Iowa.....but I would love to see exactly 7 wins and something like 25.1 ppg with a defensive TD at the end of the season to take it over the 25 point average :ROFLMAO:

Not a gimmie schedule but fairly easy one without Ohio St and Michigan to reach those goals. If they have a healthy McNamara the whole season I would be shocked if they didn't reach that.
Let's hope that in order to meet both objectives they have to run the score up in their last game (Nov. 24th) at Nebraska, after being shut out the previous week (Nov. 19th) at home by the Illini.

That D is still going to be real tough. Picked him up from transfer portal yesterday. All-ACC Conference 3rd team in 2020 and 2nd team in 2021 and 2022 🤮

Iowa has never heard of "just win baby"?

Ferentz better hope Utah St and Western Michigan are down and they can score 45-50 in each or he's done!
You'll see starting offensive players on the field late in both of these with 10-14 point leads. It better not cost
them early season injuries. This is a disaster of a deal. laughing all fall.

I have to respect my Iowa friends, as they really do have "Hawkeye" ingrained in their DNA ... because let me tell you, they are NOT happy with this whole situation, and yet they'll be showing up to tailgate or hit up their local Iowa bar wherever they live for the first game, no matter what - even if just to party.

I cannot wait for the day that Illinois has finally built up that type of "football culture."

I respect the team and fans. Just don’t care for the “King” coach and his “Prince” and how they treat the kids.

I wish more coaches had exact benchmarks to meet or they were terminated written into their contracts. I see no problem with this.

I think the reason we’re having fun is two fold.

1. The metrics appear to be incredibly low bars to clear. As of the level of performance stipulated in the contract is going to keep fans from calling for him to be fired.

2. The metrics aren’t closely aligned with his job. For instance he gets credit for defensive touchdowns.

I for one can’t wait for the drama of a defensive player sliding down after what could be an end of game pick 6.

Is it a low bar?

Ferentz is fired if Iowa doesn’t average 25+ PPG.

Illinois averaged 24.2 PPG last year. And that’s with nation’s leading rusher Chase Brown, a pretty consistent QB in Tommy Devito. Would you fire Lunney next year if Illinois doesn’t score over 25 PPG?

Benchmarks can be manipulated. For instance, let’s say for arguments sake, Iowa isn’t going to score 25 a game in the big ten and they kinda know it. They might have to run up the score in the early season games, play a kid and get him hurt or be up 10 and still trying to score with the starters in the 4th quarter. Something bad could happen.

Would I fire Lunney? No. Were there complaints about his job performance last year? Yes. If it continues in years 2-6 do I think calls for a replacement? I do.

As for 25 PPG. That would put Iowa:
8th in the Big Ten (not as bad as it sounds)
10th in the Big 12 (worse than it sounds)
10th in the PAC 12 (exactly how it sounds)
10th in the SEC
9th in the ACC

So you may not call it a “low” bar, but it certainly seems to be a below average bar to me.

It would be a nice improvement over their prior year, if that’s the way you prefer to frame it.

To your points about illinois, we had the nations leading rusher by yards, but failed to convert that to TD’s. And even with Tommy’s high completion percentage, he missed some time with injury and wasn’t great (my subjective opinion) on downfield throws. We were more focused on field position and time of possession to let our defense win games as a strategy.

I guess what I’m trying highlight is:
1) you can add injuries to the list of things that could go wrong for Brian. QB1 goes down and he better hope he’s got a solid QB2.
2) leading the nation in rushing yards would be another sub optimal contract stipulation when the goal is to score more points than the other guys and you only control part of the equation.

Lol, this game was literally so hilarious to watch with my Iowa friends. :ROFLMAO:
It should be mentioned I guess that South Dakota State was an awesome team and 1-AA champs.

According to the Sagarin ratings they were the #41 team in all of college football.

And you know that's accurate because that's right next to #42 Iowa State.....who also held Iowa to only 7 points in Iowa City last year :ROFLMAO:
