“It was a tough decision,” Hester told The News-Gazette on Friday. “From the business side, traveling and conducting an insurance business was difficult when you have such a time commitment through the basketball season. From a family decision, it was really weighing on me. I was spending so much time away from the kids and the wife.”

Illinois is in the initial stage of finding Hester’s replacement and Brian Barnhart’s future broadcast partner. Preliminary talks have begun with Learfield Sports and Fighting Illini Sports Properties.

Jerry was pretty good so he will be missed. Also was a fun player to watch.

I think a former Illini player like Jerry should be chosen. Jerry was good with analysis, and he will be missed.

Hester was good, he'll be missed. Saw this with football too; can't blame Kitner or Hester for stepping away especially after the recent seasons they've been through.

Games won't sound the same. Felt like that when Jack Buck left Mike Shannon at KMOX. Cardinal games still don't sound "right."

Best of luck to Hester!

I'm really going to miss him. Really enjoyable and good insight.

Yup. He has been a great credit to the program and asset to the fanbase for quite a while. Seems like it's been much longer than a decade. He'll be missed!
