Johnny Newton named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

Congratulations Johnny! A well deserved recognition.

When will the Big 10 rename the Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year Award?

It's disrespectful to have Fitzgerald's name on that trophy. They removed Paterno's name from a trophy. Fitz needs to be cancelled, too.

I'm at work so can't do this: someone please make a GIF of Johnny's initial series in the 2H @ Minnesota after his 2-quarter suspension for the "targeting" of Wisconsin's QB the previous game: he single-handedly demolishes the right side of the MN line and then, once in the backfield, pursues the QB laterally down the line with the agility of Baryshnikov, ultimately subsuming him like a supernova liquidates planets in its path.

That was by far my favorite defensive play of the season.

Where do you rank Newton as all time great Illini?

Better than Mercilus, Howard, Hardy, Rice. Hard to compare LBs to DL but he did a lot without a great defense around him. Also he got double and tripled team

Mr. Johnny Newton will always have a $ lucrative career after his NFL. Illini Nation doesn't forget and we take care of our dedicated amazing Men! Broadcast, coaching, business, etc. Whatever he wants after his playing days he will be taken care of and afforded the best opportunity. He has Earned. Good luck Sir in the NFL. You will always have a home across America with Illini Nation and alumni! đź’Ż kudos to a job well done.

He was a beast. Despite constant double and triple teams, he still impacted every game and his motor never stopped. He led the nation in snap counts for a D-Lineman. QB pressures for a DT, and blocked kicks with four. He was so dominant and we saw his impact by the unfair loss of him in the 4th quarter of the Wisky game, and his second half insertion in the Minny game where he massively impacted the ability of Minny’s offense. Corey Liuget was a very good player and the last dominant DT for us, but Johnny Newton was even more spectacular and should have a great NFL career. What a dominant player and a great representative of UI!

Up there with Spoony for best defensive player since the 90s certainly. Could add in Vontae, Liuget, and Mercilus.
