So Coach Groce wants Leron to start making "championship choices daily"?

How about Coach starts making some championship choices and start winning some games?

I don't think I'll ever feel good about someone brandishing a knife in a crowded, public setting.

I don't have so much problem with brandishing a knife defensively - which is what Black apparently did - as opposed to offensively going after someone with it (of course that becomes more than brandishing). Pulling a weapon defensively has the tendency to cause reflection on the part of the aggressor, but at the risk of escalating the situation into something much worse. It is illegal because I assume in Illinois Black had a duty to retreat if possible even if he felt his safety was threatened and regardless of who was in the right in the dispute. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, a person's judgment becomes clouded, especially if you believe you have been wrongfully accused of something. Fortunately things didn't escalate and no one was hurt, and hopefully Black learned an important lesson.

I see taking a defense stance deemed too aggressive by the law as distinct from domestic battery charges where someone was actually harmed.

I generally agree with this, though you have to think that LB is 6'6 and built. Even in average situations in which he felt attacked, I wouldn't think that he would need a knife to defend himself. It's actually concerning to me that he would feel the need to have a knife in the first place, suggesting that he's felt the level of danger above your most menacing campus interactions.

Maybe this is a symptom of upbringing/Memphis, maybe it's not. Hopefully Groce and Whitman have a much better sense of the kid than we do.

On topic...

Reports are that LB apologized and expressed remorse for his actions at the time of his arrest and he maintained that attitude throughout the process. He owned up to his mistake, imo, and it's time to move on.
