As a wise person once said, 'You are what your record says you are.' We like Coach. We're lucky to have him. But his Illini record thus far is to have good to great seasonal teams... and then wash out in the Dance. Possible reasons are that the team is not adequately prepared for tournament play... or team lacks confidence... or team doesn't listen to Coach. Or something else. Coach knows what the feeling on the Illini street is. He must be feeling the pressure of needing to do well in the tournament this time around. And that can be a good or bad thing. Good in that it can inspire you to do great things. Or bad in that if you allow pressure to get to you... you can make yourself worse and not perform to your abilities. The Illini have shown several weaknesses so far. Ballhandling. Interior defense. And melting down in some pressure situations. And in a sense... a lack of mental toughness. All of these things are concerning heading into the intensity of March ball. There is still too much inconsistency from game to game from the players. Which Domask do we get today? Which Ty? Which Goode? Is Shannon gonna be Shannon or something less? Who is this team's emotional leader beyond the raw talent of Shannon? Hawkins is the closest thing to being the rock of this team. But his temper gets the best of him at times and that hurts your ability to lead men into competition. There is more unease about how The Beloved will do in the Dance today than there was a couple days ago. They have time to pull it together and get into a good game-mind-set before things get intense. The question is will they... what is in their heart. And how bad do they want it.
