I assume this means he wants to transfer? You think He would have interest in Illinois and will Lovie go after him? That would be the quickest way to upgrade the defense next year with all the players gone at the end of this season.

He already redshirted. If he were to miss this year and next he'd have 1 year of eligibility left after only playing 1 year so far. Doubt he'd do that. He either knows he can transfer or maybe he's just retiring.

I don't follow this.

Here's how I see it:
2014 - Redshirted (has 4 years left)
2015 - played 3 games (has 3 years left)
2016 - transfer year (does not count as year of eligibility; has 3 years left)
2017 - ? (has 2 years left)
2018 - ? (has 1 year left)
2019 - ? (finished)

The way I see it, he will have three years of eligibility left.

Transfer years count against your eligibility clock. Some guys, like Lunt, use their redshirt year during their transfer year.

I'm pretty sure they don't. But I guess I'm not 100% positive.

Either way, he'd still have 2 years somewhere else, right? Unless we're thinking he may have already used a year this year somehow?

When players come in they have 5 years to play 4 years/seasons. When you transfer you have to sit out a year which counts against you. As a previous poster stated most people use their redshirt during their sit out year.

Division I five-year clock: If you play at a Division I school, you have five-calendar years in which to play four seasons of competition. Your five-year clock starts when you enroll as a full-time student at any college. Thereafter, your clock continues, even if you spend an academic year in residence as a result of transferring; decide to red shirt, if you do not attend school or even if you go part-time during your college career.

I guess I could have just googled that. Weird I never knew there was a clock like that. I always thought you just had 4 "playing years". But, then again, I guess that makes sense why players/teams need to request an additional year for some circumstances.
