A great(est) boxer and a true stand-up person. He won me over by staying true to himself and being a truly good man.

I agree with your entire statement. It's a shame that there's a big chunk of 2 generations that disagree with the second part. He took a LOT of flack for his stance on Viet Nam, Civil Rights, and Islam.

Was lucky enough to meet him 10 years ago. Was a intern in the front office of a minor league baseball team. His grandson was playing a tournament in the stadium. He came to watch him play and we set him up in the press box so he wouldn't be bothered and it was easy to get in and out. I got the lucky job of making sure he and his wife were taken care of all day. Between games his wife asked if we could turn on a TV in the press box and if we had ESPN Classic. We did and I tuned it on. I didn't realize they were replaying one of his fights with Frazier. She set Ali up in a chair in front of the TV and he got in the best boxing stance he could while sitting down. I watched a round of the fight with him, and for the entire round, he mimicked his every movement that was on TV. His movements were only a inch or 2, but in his mind he knew every second of that fight and was going though it in his mind. One of the coolest moments of my life.

Thank you for sharing this story. What an amazing memory to have made.

As I think he should in the former and the latter. I have no problem with his civil rights positions. He took his punishment on the Vietnam thing though so it was over and done long ago as far as I''m concerned. Was a big fan of his back when boxing was actually a thing. I still have a problem with the Nation of Islam and Farrakhan however, so being a part of that is still a negative to me.

I always admired his stance on being drafted for the war. Those who volunteered or were drafted and served were honorable men. Those who were against the war for moral or religious reasons and accepted their punishment for refusing the draft acted honorably as well. Those who fled to Canada or used connections to get deferments were cowards.

My wife works for an artistic glass company and had the opportunity to work with the Ali's on an installation for their home pretty recently (like a couple weeks ago). She said they were excellent people to work with, and was quite sad when she found out that he had passed.
