I have a long history on this one --started following Lance as an amateur, and did some racing myself. Spoke with his teammates along the way, and attended a number of his early races. When he was known as a 'one-day' racer in the pro ranks, a friend asked me if he would win the TdF and I said I wouldn't put it past him, given how competitive he was (no one in the sports press that I'm aware of at that time thought he could convert). Eventually, he won Toud Dupont which was a hard stage race and the biggest in the US. Of course, then came the cancer and his remarkable story of not only surviving it, but avoiding some of the worst treatment options that would have ruined any potential career subsequently. And the rest, as they say, is history. Everyone I've ever spoken with about Lance paints a picture of a ruthless dictator. He's not only oblivious to the devastation he wreaks, he's vindictive to those who get caught in his way. Below is an interesting read about some of the things he did to one his "friends". It's just one of a zillion stories on how he's gone after people that trusted him and supported him. Everyone loves a winner (me included), but rooting for him was a faustian bargain. It took tremendous work to bring the truth to light, and a lot of folks suffered to bring it out. IMHO, he's more of a cautionary tale of winning at all costs, and how difficult it is to topple a powerful person. It's a story that repeats itself constantly in sport.
