The University of Mississippi’s marching band will no longer play any variation of the song “Dixie” – a tradition some seven decades old at football games and other sporting events.

. . . .

"We felt that it’s the right thing to do. It’s time to move forward," Bjork said. "It fits in with where the university has gone in terms of making sure we follow our creed, core values of the athletic department, and that all people feel welcome.

"The Athletics Department asked (the band) to create a new and modern pregame show that does not include Dixie and is more inclusive for all fans," the University Athletic Department said in a statement released after Mississippi Today asked about the song being dropped.

It'll only be time before the "3 in 1" and and "Oskee Wow-Wow" will be scrapped from the Marching Illini's repertoire.

I'm guessing whistling dixie has something to do with slaver/the old south? I can see them banning it if that is the case.

However, weren't the 3 in 1 and oskee wow-wow created independent of the Chief or any Native American imagery? I'm truly asking, I thought I read that somewhere. If they are independent, there will be a leg to stand on to hold on to both of those.

Other than the fact that the Chief was once one of the titular "3" in 1, there is no nexus between the 3 in 1 and Oskee Wow Wow and Chief Illiniwek whatsoever.

Is this sarcasm? It's hard to tell sometimes and I like your usually sarcastic/somewhat sarcastic posts so I'm not sure.

Not sarcasm at all. Oskee Wow Wow predates the Chief by over a decade.

I understand that between people's bitterness over what has happened and their love of NCAA conspiracy theories, this idea that they are going to come for all of our traditions over and over again has a sort of emotional appeal. But it's really quite silly.

It's over. I've moved on, and IMO the rest of our fanbase ought to do the same.

I think as long as the powers that be don't get any funny ideas of trying to get rid of it, most fans are okay with where we are in terms of the 3 in 1.

I wish the Chief were back, but I don't think it'll ever happen.

It was an honest mistake on my part; and no, my post isn't a conspiracy theory on my behalf.

The NCAA doesn't have to go after the traditions - the administration can on their own accord.

"Dixie" originated as a black-face minstrel song and became the unofficial national anthem for the Confederacy. It has lines like...

"Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton, Old times there are not forgotten."

and

"In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie. Away, away, away down south in Dixie!"

Anyone equating "Dixie" with the "3 in 1" has no idea what they're talking about.
