I remember telling my grandpa when we first hired TB that, "I can tell just by looking at this guy that he's in way over his head." Ron Guenther had a huge hand in selecting Mike Thomas. Those were tumultuous times at UIUC. Michael Hogan, the President at the time, was way in over his head and had other problems. Chancellor Herman was gone and Phyllis Wise was just coming. She was the one that introduced Thomas. I can't say enough, Guenther had a big say. Thomas hired Groce, Beckman and Bollant. Josh had a huge job to undo all that. Unfortunately, some people still give him average grades because he hired Lovie and Fahey, however he has done a great job of turning those programs around. A guy that has quietly done an outstanding job is Chancellor Robert Jones. He and Josh are literally knitted at the hip. As I've said, I fear the time that Josh moves on. He is a very hot commodity because of his age and background. Not sure where he ends up but he has been great for the University of Illinois. Our brand has returned in a big way. Thanks, Josh.!!
I’d hope the powers that be make Josh’s pockets as fat as possible to retain him. Maybe this is home for him?
I wouldn't as Thomas was instrumental in destroying both basketball and football. But Josh has corrected that mess.

In fairness, Bollant really looked like he should have been a home run hire. He'd taken UWGB to 5 consecutive conference championships and 4 consecutive NCAA tournaments.
