It’s been shown that the statistical probability of winning is better if you go for it at that time of the game, on that yard marker and with the lead. BB is pridefully going against his own “stats drive decisions” mantra when it comes to teaching football basics. He is wrong, and he’s too proud to admit it. And I’m not a BB hater, I want him to succeed. Maybe if we had a top 5 defense I’d have trusted them to get another stop. But Purdue had driven to within the 10 yard line on multiple occasions. They are a dynamic offense even without a bunch of players. They were bound to punch it in at some point. Had I told BB we’d hold Purdue to only 13 points, I bet he’d be VERY happy with that. If at that same decision point at the 9 minute mark yesterday, it was still 9-6, and he knew without a doubt Purdue would still get to 13 points, he would have made a different choice. And while he can’t know the future, he can see the game for more than just that one play. He had to know that Purdue was gonna find a way to get down the field. It’s what high powered offenses do in crunch time. Maryland just did it to us. And with that sort of knowledge (which almost every Illini fan watching already had), he should have realized that keeping that offense off the field or getting more points to offset what that offense might do is the right choice. Going for it on 4th is risky, but we want to see risk. We want to see a winning attitude and competitive spirit. In that situation, there are three plays. Go for it, FG, and punt. Only one of those choices is a near 100% guarantee to let the other team’s offense back on the field. I wonder which choice Jeff Brohm wanted us to make…
