They have won 27 of their past 32 games at PNC Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates, whom they drubbed 18-4 on Sunday. Not only was outfielder Dylan Carlson to undergo an MRI for a tight left hamstring sustained on Saturday, but left-hander Steven Matz was added to the list after he lasted only four pitches Sunday before coming out because of a stiff left shoulder. Matz, whose fastball velocity was down three miles an hour, had shoulder discomfort in 2020 and 2016 with the New York Mets but not last season with Toronto when he was 14-7. He never has had shoulder surgery. Right-hander Angel Rondon, just activated from the taxi squad, was called on immediately to replace Matz. He finished a strikeout of Ke’Bryan Hayes and then allowed a hit and a walk but escaped the first inning. Having gained his bearings, Rondon, who features a fastball of 92 to 94 mph, a slider and a changeup, didn’t allow a hit over the next four innings and was stretched to 88 pitches over five innings as he recorded his first major league victory. He hadn’t gone any longer than four innings at Memphis. “That was incredibly important for him to do what he did today,” said manager Oliver Marmol. “It just seemed like he played catch for a while.” [/QUOTE]
