Solid hire in a vacuum, weird fit, totally out of left field, and I still would rather have Gus Malzahn.
Wasn’t the rumor that they wanted to keep Steele and some defensive staff but not promote him? Maybe they got Harsin to agree to those terms since he’s an offensive guy and would need a connection to the players, conference, snd recruits

I don’t see this as a good fit at all. Easily could end poorly.
I'm not sure about the fit or not. I will say that it's a bit unimpressive in my opinion. Just quickly went through his record. About 50% vs teams in the 10-25 range and no wins against the top 10. No games. This is really a new world for him.

Michigan's team defense was very solid in both 2018 and 2019 --- with a blip only in 2020.
Don brown is the only reason harbaugh hasn’t already been fired at Michigan. The fact that they’re keeping harbaugh and getting rid of brown is potentially the dumbest carousel decision I’ve see so far.

doubt he’ll come here though. BB will probably want more control over the D than someone like brown would accept.

I loathe the constant discussion on age but it's probably a factor here. Not that Brown is ineffective as a DC, but that he isn't going to be willing to wait through a rebuild. He'll go to a team like LSU and have tons of talent to put together a top-25 defensive unit in the first season.

I got a really good feeling during one of the video's/podcasts, when I heard that BB wants to pepper some former Illini into his coaching staff. I think it was something like (paraphrasing) "........I'd like to get some guys on staff who recall what Football success was like at Illiniois".

I immediately interpreted this as Scheelhaase, but several other options do exist (i.e. Bellamy).

Will be interesting to see if he can deliver.

While I am not opposed to getting Scheelhaase on the staff, I am not sure I would characterize him as someone who "recalls what football success was like at Illinois."

Well, he's apparently out of a job, so he's making zero dollars per year now.

Seems like a pipedream unless those guys are taking pay cuts. I guess Robinson could require less as he's currently unemployed, but he was over 1 mil at SC. Chaney makes like 1.6 mil, and according to a previous post, the S&C guy makes 700k.

I assume Chaney would only come here if Tennessee makes a late move to fire Pruitt.
Yes, Michigan’s strength coach was tied for the second highest salary of all strength coaches. Ohio State strength coach is now the highest paid. For quite a few years the Iowa strength coach was the highest paid in the land before his departure. I believe he was close to 900k before he was let go. What’s interesting is that the assistant strength coaches are not compensated very well at all. At Iowa when the head guy was making all those bucks a couple of his assistants were only making around 50k. Those assistants spend some insane hours with players and at the facility.
