I don't know what I was expecting, but it's definitely been interesting on how little is actually leaked. That football scoop article came out basically when the decision was being finalized. And it kinda made sense, as when you're interviewing those types of guys, the guys not getting the job might leak it to try to better their own contracts. I don't think anything came out before the Petersen or Miller announcements.

Well I was simply speculating about who he has on his defensive staff and liked the idea of poaching a top assistant from missou
Well that makes sense. All I seen was bickering about whether Mizzou wanted him on staff or not.

uhhhhhhh its a message board. This is literally what 90% of the post are
We all have our reasons to come here i guess. I personally come for info on our program, not for a circle jerk of who knows more about the inner workings of staff relationships of schools not named Illinois.

Wh... where do you think info on our program comes from? It either comes from news media with actual access or posters who claim to have access. The purpose of the message board is to discuss and speculate.

EDIT: Also GIFs

I think Walters is an excellent get. Some asked about his recruiting. I mentioned he didn't recruit St. Louis because most of his efforts were elsewhere. He did beat out Alabama for Ennis Rakestraw for Duncanville last year who started as a true freshman for him. The kid made a post on Twitter about recruiting me and leaving. The kid might have interest considering Beason is here as well. Something to keep an eye on.

I mean 2 things can be true. Illinois can be very excited about hiring Walters. Mizzou can be perfectly fine with losing him. It doesn't mean he's an amazing coach or a terrible coach. It means the decision made sense to all parties involved.

As far as Mizzou goes, its simple. A new P5 head coach is not going to get rid of the DC of a team that defense was ranked top 15 in some categories. This year opened the door and I am sure it was mutual interest to part ways. That is not considered a negative, that is considered business. That is like crapping on Knowles because BB chose Walters. He was a benefit to Mizzou last year season and will be a benefit here this coming season. Great hire and more impressive than the last few DC's.

Gabe DeArmond, the main PowerMizzou guy, mentioned in his podcasts with the Illinois guys that Mizzou seemed to have a position-specific recruiting strategy with their coaches, as opposed to a region/location strategy, meaning Walters would recruit DBs from pretty much anywhere in the country, but really only focus on DBs. Not sure how accurate it is, but he seems pretty well plugged in.

That is the case for the new staff but not so much for the previous staff. Ford was the main STL recruiter for Mizzou for years. Some had mixed emotions about him so Odem started sending guys like walters to help out. The guy has shown the ability to recruit in the SEC. He should be fine with recruiting.

Did a little checking on the "Bert" thing - Arkansas forum, other sites. Yes, it goes back to his Wisconsin days. Some guy claimed his family started calling coach that. Dunno. But Coach Bielema reportedly doesn't like the nickname a bit, so I will never use it after this post. I admit when I first heard about Bret as a candidate for the Illinois job, I thought his first name was Bert - just my ignorance.

Didn't Beason leave. Am I confusing different players? I only saw a Twitter handle not the name. Going to the draft.

I'm pretty sure Beason stayed. There was some talk about him going to Oregon St, but nothing materialized out of it that I remember.

So Walters was announced as Defensive Coordinator. No Secondary or Safeties was added. Do we read into it then that we will have separate secondary coach(es)? Petersen was announced as OC/QBs I believe. Not that it really matters, but it'll keep the thread going and would indicate that Secondary/S/CB are still open positions to be filled.

Yeah, there will definitely be something additional in the secondary.

HC - Bielema

10 Assistant Slots
OC/QB - Petersen
OL - Miller
RB - Patterson
WR - TBD

ST - TBD (Bielema's been pretty clear this will be a freestanding role, but we'll see)

DC - Walters
DL - TBD
LB - TBD
DB - TBD

And then you have one extra spot to play with. Splitting the front seven up into DT/EDGE/ILB is common. TE coaches that are glorified recruiters a la CPatt are common, we'll see.

Yeah. I guess my comment was more along the lines of everything is still open on the defensive side. The positions can be divided any which way. If he was already named as DB, that would mean there's no other DB/CB/S guy, and so on. Still a ton of flexibility and openings to fill this thing out defensively.

Is Walters the youngest coordinator we've had in awhile? Can't remember any others less than 35 that we've had. Looking forward to see how he can help us improve, and hopefully he brings a fire with him.
