This is what Whitman alluded to with Lovie....fire or extend. Had to make a decision this year, could lead to tough financials decisions sooner later.
Makes me kinda happy we moved when we did. I wasn't a huge Bielema fan when he was hired, but I think if he was really trying to get back to the B1G and Harbaugh, Fleck, Day, and Fitz all move on for one reason or another (Could see Allen too) we would have a hard time getting our first, second, or third choices in that competitive of market.yea , re Lovie’s situation . a coach has to have 3-4 years left on his contract at any given time .
re Harbaugh - nothing there indicates anything will or should be different in 2021 than it was in 2020 or 2019 . He’s gone on his terms the minute the right pro job opens up . his buyout is likely very low on both sides . also , you wonder if there has been any talk between him & Chargers .
I think there will be A LOT of HC turnover in the B1G after next season - coaches being fired , moving on & up , maybe retiring . could see 3-4 guys leaving imo.
Peterson confirmed during his interview with L. Tate this week that he'll have two more Assistant Coaches on offense --- WR and TE, so I guess we now know where that 10th assistant will be.Yeah, there will definitely be something additional in the secondary.
HC - Bielema
10 Assistant Slots
OC/QB - Petersen
OL - Miller
RB - Patterson
WR - TBD
ST - TBD (Bielema's been pretty clear this will be a freestanding role, but we'll see)
DC - Walters
DL - TBD
LB - TBD
DB - TBD
And then you have one extra spot to play with. Splitting the front seven up into DT/EDGE/ILB is common. TE coaches that are glorified recruiters a la CPatt are common, we'll see.
Eerie , odd silence on Bellamy?Anyone think we move Bellamy to ST coach? It's essentially a promotion and if he wants to go up in the ranks it might be better than moving back to WR.
Right? And he has kinda been cryptic nwith his posts this week but still using ILLgang. Makes me think he said I am going to see what's out there, but if I get promoted I'll stay or something like that.Eerie , odd silence on Bellamy?

It was tweeted/reported that he owes Mizzou a 300k buyout. Not sure if that's accurate or if there was some sort of agreement arranged.I don't know if anyone knows the answer regarding Walters but....I assume he was still under contract, so was there any buyout we had to pay or was it just a mutual decision by all parties to separate and move on.
I liked the part about the scheme/alignment. He described it as a 4-2-5, with the 4th lineman in a standing stance but pretty much a rush end, and the 5th db as a hybrid safety/linebacker. It sounds somewhat similar to Koenning with his Bandit (DE/LB) and Star (S/LB). I may be misremembering the terms or mixing them with Banks' hybrid name. This gives a decent explanation of what happened with our DC at Mizzou

What happend in Starkville? Why did Ryan Walters leave? We try to make sense of things in our weekly chat with Mizzou fans.www.stltoday.com
One of them had the LEO (Linebacker/End Option), but I can't remember which one it was off the top of my head either.I liked the part about the scheme/alignment. Edit: He also talked about the alignment of the linemen being different, With them usually being lined up directly across the center, and the 2 outside guys being lined up on the inside half of the tackles. That is pretty different, in that it's almost a tradition 3-4 alignment vs something that would look more like a 4 man front (with 1 end standing up).

I get the impression there is a decent chance there was no buyout required - they might have been able to come to a mutual agreement to just part ways with no one owing the other anything. This gives a decent explanation of what happened with our DC at Mizzou

DC Ryan Walters said Barry Odom gave him control of playcalling and game-planning when he named him DC, and last fall's challenges at Mizzou were due in large part due to COVID, injuries, etc.
Said he wanted to learn from Bielema and has "aspirations as a coach."
DC Ryan Walters said Illinois OC Tony Petersen connected him with Bielema. Petersen was an analyst at Mizzou
DC Ryan Walters said he's always thought Illinois was a place "that could be special" for football with the right coaches and backing.
DC Ryan Walters said you got to build a defense/scheme around the talent.
I'm a believer in making quarterbacks throw into tight windows and closing off the middle of the field. And I like to confuse and harass the quarterback.
Ryan Walters says he's recruited Texas, Florida, St. Louis, Colorado, Arizona and some in California.
Ryan Walters said he and Bielema are discussing rest of defensive staff. Bielema has more contacts and final say, but they are doing it together.
"I'm appreciative of that for sure."
Ryan Walters says, "From a scheme standpoint, we don't know yet. We have to get to know the players."
"You get to build something. We want to build Illinois' defense and do what is best suited for the guys in the locker room."
Ryan Walters: "I'm a teacher first. I don't yell and scream just to yell and scream."
Wants to get to know players on a personal level.
Ryan Walters said he will be on the phone with a few seniors to try to get them to come back.
DB Tony Adams, DT Roderick Perry and DE Isaiah Gay haven't announced their decisions.
Bad fit for Illinois. Our Motto is - Wide Windows and Opening the Middle of the Field.
I deleted twitter off my phone yesterday. I am actually going to miss his morning messages. I appreciated themHe tweets stuff like that literally every morning.

A lot of the criticism of Harbaugh on Michigan podcasts has been that he has actually mellowed out significantly and basically can't tell his dog to go home so to speak.Makes me kinda happy we moved when we did. I wasn't a huge Bielema fan when he was hired, but I think if he was really trying to get back to the B1G and Harbaugh, Fleck, Day, and Fitz all move on for one reason or another (Could see Allen too) we would have a hard time getting our first, second, or third choices in that competitive of market.
Honestly, I don't see Harbaugh making it back to the NFL. I think he has a reputation of being a hardass who is hard to work with. Also he is very conservative for an offensive minded coach who has a good defense. He belongs in college where he gets new kids to work with every 3-4 years so his message and his antics don't get old.
BB might have himself in the right situation as long as he and Walters can get the defense up to par in a year or two. Our stable of RBs and Veteran OL has me thinking we can score, grind clock, and keep games close if the D can be even average.
While many liked the Bart Miller introductory press conference, I thought Ryan Walters was much more impressive! Really a fan of his maturity and communication skills, at just 34 years old. I realize Lovie is/was a defensive coach, but I just feel like our defense will improve five-fold over the next three years under BB and RW!! Can't wait to see things progress starting this spring.
