Tennessee was up 30-0 on Kent State in the first quarter...and proceeds to run an onside kick

Few other notes from that Kent State/Tennessee game:

-Tennessee gave Kent State the option for there to be a running clock in the 2nd half but Kent State declined. Kent State's head coach said he talked to the captains and they told him absolutely not.
-Speaking of the Kent State head coach, Kenni Burns, he has a central Illinois and B1G connection. He went to high school at SHG and played as a running back at IU in the mid-2000s. He was also a candidate for the EIU football head coaching position the last two times it was open.
-This was already mentioned on here but it still bears noting. With the Vols already up 30-0 late in the 1st quarter, Tennessee decided to run a surprise onside kick and recovered the ball. I get them wanting to put that on tape for a future opponent but it seems like that's something that could have been done against a team you weren't already dominating.

Did not realize until today that my Beavers play Purdue this week. What have I done to earn the chance to root against Walters and Purdue this year? Life is good.

Purdue fan posted on Oregon St board I visit, and just asked him how the fans are feeling about Walters. Iā€™ll be interested to see his response.

Surely there's a bottom feeder non-AQ school they can beat up on instead.

Please do share it here. I'm curious to see what the vibes are.

Given that he introduced himself on Beavers board in a respectful manor, Iā€™d guess heā€™s not a ā€œmilitantā€ fan. So I think his reply (see below) was fairly measured. But heā€™s a big enough fan to make the trip to Corvallis this weekend.

ā€œI would say that they are - but mostly holding judgment until after this game. You know, you'll always get those guys hammering to fire the coach and stuff but I think most rational fans understand that Purdue isn't going to be a program that wins 7-8 games on a yearly basis in the Big Ten. Purdue doesn't have the 'dudes' to run the defense that Walters did at Illinois and I think that is where a lot of the pause starts. Purdue is just getting bullied on the defensive side of the ball.

A lot of the Purdue fans are in the older crowd and Walters definitely comes off as cocky and has said some things that he has not backed up yet. He said they had the Notre Dame game circled all year and then lays an egg. He said that he didn't have anything to learn about his team before the opener last year - then gets beat by Fresno State.

We will see!ā€

I'm jealous he's making the trip! I was there about 10 years ago to tour campus as part of an initiative to recruit more international students, and I've been dreaming about going back ever since.

He does seem rather measured, and I appreciate it. It'll be interesting to see where both Purdue and Illinois are in about a month.

Iā€™m jealous too. The year I spent at Oregon State might have been my favorite year of college. Jealousy is heightened because heā€™s going out early so that he can spend a day on the coast in Newport and Depoe Bay (a harbor there was where boat stealing scene in One Flew Over the Cuckooā€™s Neat was filmed). Just hope the Beavers can spoil the rest of his trip.
