Illinois coach Bruce Weber promised he has not forgotten about freshman Myke Henry.

Henry made the most of his minutes by scoring 18 points in a three-game span against Purdue, Northwestern and Nebraska, but since then he has languished on the bench. In five minutes at Penn State, Henry did not take a shot, and he didn't play against Wisconsin.

"He can get it in the hoop," Weber said. "He plays without nervousness. We have to get him in early."

Illinois has seemingly done just enough to get into the NCAA tournament as of today.

The question going forward now that the Big Ten season is nearly halfway through is whether just enough will be just enough for Illinois coach Bruce Weber to retain his job.

Reaching the tournament has traditionally given coaches job security. Going dancing from one of the big six conferences typically requires winning 20-plus games, defeating a few ranked opponents and finishing in the top half of the conference. With those results, a team is typically among the top 30-45 teams in the country.

His game is not entirely ready for the NBA, but his body is.

His heart would love to remain a college kid, "stay a kid a little longer" as he says, but the responsibilities of his life -- an ailing mother, a brother in Afghanistan -- dictate a more mature path.

There is method to their madness and, if it was an unheard dog whistle for some, it didn't miss my radar: Their minority opinion -- excuse the reference -- was a thinly veiled move to put Thomas on notice that, when the time comes to change the men's basketball assignment, it better be an African-American.

Montgomery and Oliver hail from Chicago, where the large African-American culture lives and dies with its basketball. And they're hearing plenty of scuttlebutt up that way, as well as down this way, that Bruce Weber is not long for the job if his Illini continue to struggle. The trustees weren't really trying to dump Beckman. They were simply shoving a foot in the door in anticipation of the next go-round, whenever it happens.

Following the road game, the Illini host Michigan State and Northwestern, then play four of the next five games on the road. Coming off losses to Penn State and Wisconsin, the Illini have hit a crossroads.

"This is the breaking point of our season," Weber said. "You have to make strides, correct some little things, then come with a great mindset, a toughness factor that will help us get ready.

"We're not that far off. Now we have to figure out what things we can correct."

Brandon Paul was sensational two weeks ago with 43 points in a 79-74 home win over Ohio State. It was easy then to buy into Illinois. Now? Sell. The Illini lost at Penn State, 54-52, and then fell Sunday to Wisconsin, 67-63. This Illinois team is still young in key spots but the lack of consistency makes it exceptionally hard to buy into this team being a true Big Ten contender. Bubble here they come.

The score tied at 53 with five minutes left, Illinois didn't show the urgent effort that made the difference in 50-50 games against Nebraska and Northwestern. Weber said the most disappointing aspect of the loss was that Wisconsin "out-hustled" and "out-toughed" the Illini.

"At home," said Weber, whose team trailed on the Matto chart for just the second time this Big Ten season (Nebraska). "You can't do that. You shouldn't allow it to happen."

"They got a couple offensive rebounds that killed us," said Joseph Bertrand (15 points, five rebounds, five assists).

The Illini lost the Matto battle 25-23, a hustle chart number boosted by the Badgers with some late-game offensive rebounds, and when the final seconds ticked off the clock, 90 percent of the season's first sellout already had split for the parking lots. Illinois plays Saturday at Minnesota (7 p.m., Big Ten Network).

"That was a goal to not have highs and lows in the season," Illini center Meyers Leonard said. "Obviously, that's taken a turn. Hopefully, we can steal one on the road. Hopefully, we get better. That's what matters. We've got a lot of guys with talent. We've got to continue to listen to coaching."

Illinois has made it a priority to get Leonard quality touches in the post. In the past two games he's attempted 24 shots. And that's the goal, Weber said. They would like the big man to have 12-15 scoring opportunities in every game. Leonard grew frustrated early in the Penn State game when teammates weren't looking for him. "But in the second half I thought they did a great job of getting me the ball," Leonard said. "I know sometimes it's hard. They've got people hounding them on the perimeter. It's just a tough angle. I've just got to always remember to stay positive and keep playing."
