Wow our starting guards had 63 of our 78 points. Gotta get some points in the paint and rebounds! We would be a tough out if NE can step it up by years end along with MH!

Well, the last-second shot wasn't in the Sportcenter top 10 as of yet, but as a special bonus Meyers was in the top 10 for the second time so far this season.

Wow, what a finish! It tells you something when a team seems to win all the close games. Groce's teams did that at Ohio and we just got one here, in a TRUE road game. The last coach had a propensity of finding a way to lose. I think we have the opposite here, and I can't wait for this season and the next few to unfold. Hopefully something special happens and we can finally raise a banner. In Groce We Trust. Go Illini.

Henry only with 7 minutes? Groce has his reasons. Joe B only takes 3 shots going 1-3, 21 minutes. I didnt see the game so im not sure what happened, just based on that seems like he just needs to be more aggressive and try to get some good looks at the basket.

I would've been so mad if I huddled around a computer for 2 and a half hours for us to give it away at the end...awesome game and our best win in a long time

Illini rally from 16 down to win in OT

"The kids showed great resolve," Groce said. "They kept swinging and swinging and swinging. As Tracy just said in the locker room, we didn't come out ready. They popped us in the mouth first and we responded.

"But you have to set the rules when you're on the road and we got away with one tonight.

"Give our guys credit, though, because we kept making plays."

Look at all the support at 3 am...prob zero on a ND message board after their loss. I know we missed out on D. Jax, so we'll have to wait another year to get a Top 25 talent. However it may be a blessing in disguise. Tate as a second Simeon player who was borderline high major may have really put is "in" with Coach Smith and Simeon.

Also, gotta give credit to the players for fighting back and battling adversity. It may just be a win vs a Big West opponent, but it's also the type of game that can give a season some momentum.

I did not think i was going to make it to my truck alive! Great win! The officiating was horrible, both ways albeit, and our rebounding was terrible! TA looked legit and BP was huge! DJ had a big second half and played within the offense and looked fluid all game, even though he was cold as ice (foreigner reference) in the first half. Myke Henry, Bertrand and Griffey were non existent. Sam had a good second half! We should have won by 10+ if we would have rebounded better in the first half! Groce made the adjustments and it was a completely different second half. Great defensive intensity by the guards all game! Henry didnt see the floor in the second half because he failed tp hedge out off a cpl picks which led to some layups by Hawaii. He just looked like he was going through the motions!!! This team plays with a lot of heart though, fun to watch! Completelu different team than what weve seen the past few years! I L L

9 Observations from the Hawaii Game

1. Ho hum, a win is a win. Gasp! Thank goodness for video replays on shots at the buzzer in overtime! This was a great game for team building and setting a tone. I know some of you would have sat DJ a lot earlier. I guess that's why Coach Groce makes the big bucks as a college basketball coach. DJ played the most minutes by far -- 42 minutes.

2. Tracy Abrams is the real deal. It seems to me I remember a lot of folks saying over and over again that Tracy could never be a decent point guard. I guess that's why Coach Groce makes the big bucks! What Groce understood is that Tracy is a player with a heart. He is taking to the new system like a duck to water. He is a keeper.

3. The other big weakness we had at lead guard was Brandon Paul according to some of our experts. Where is that "close the doors" guy now? As a team we had 9 turnovers in 45 minutes of basketball. Congrats to our players and our coaches.

4. Hawaii played a good game. To be honest, when you look at the stats, it's hard to understand how we won. We were outrebounded by 20, and we still won. I think it was mostly on guts.

5. It's great to win this one, but if we don't start boxing out on free throws it's going to cost us games down the road. We should have won this one in regulation.

6. It's a little tough to judge exactly how our bigs did because we don't know for sure just how good the Hawaii bigs are. Certainly Joaquim is better than most of the centers we will face, even in the B1G. Still, we have to do a better job on the boards. It's a lot better to learn how to play when you win, though. Our bigs did just enough.

7. Hawaii had an unfair advantage. Brandon Spearman did his absolute best to haunt us for not recruiting him out of Simeon. If a couple of Simeon guys I know about play with as much heart as Brandon Spearman did tonight, we should be in good shape going forward!

8. In the end, it was our three-point shooting that saved us. Hitting 36% on 11 of 31 was the difference in the game. On the other hand, if we don't get better at shooting free throws, that's going to bite us some day.

9. Well, we are in great position now to get out of the state of Hawaii (and back to America as Julian Wright would say) with no worse than a 2-2 record, and that gives us a leg up on no worse than 10-4 preconference. As long as we keep improving, we should be happy with where we are right now. Again, congrats to our players and coaches!

Go Illini!

Nice recap, Harv. Many thanks! I don't know how you were able to pound the keys so soon after that win, but nice job!

I have the worst combination of the stories above - I fought the buffering monster until halftime, late and Illini down huge, and my 3 year-old woke up at 6:30 crying about his cousins leaving (and they don't even arrive until Fri)

Still, I-L-L...
