By looking at lines early in the season you could tell Vegas did not think very highly of us. Now they're shifting the handicapping. If you wanted confirmation of a hot start and improved play, that's it.

Low scoring game, we shoot in the low 40%s, Butler the same.

The key will be can be limit stupid turnovers and can we rebound the ball. I have a feeling both teams will struggle shooting the ball.

ILLINI - 61

Butler - 58

Must play good defense and rebound tonight. No 2nd chances for Butler.

I think we'll go toe to toe into the final minutes in a nail biter and it will be a good early test against a good Butler team.

Not saying, but just saying information here. Took the time to look all this up on wikipedia, but then actually found a website showing all the info.

-Of the 27 years this tournament has been held 25 of the 27 winners have made the tournament.

-No Maui Invitational winner since 1987 has missed the tournament

-Of the 25 winners none has been seeded lower then 10

Also from the website this little bit.

Maui Invitational Winners

Not saying we are destined for a National Championship or anything, but man would it make me feel good to win this thing. Especially after seeing the guys lose in 00' to Arizona and knowing how bitter that left me feeling.
Not to add a typical Illini twist to the knife, but of the four (?) National champions who won Maui in the same year as their title, one was 1988-1989 Michigan and the other was 2004-2005 North Carolina.

And when you have a small sample size, this is the only measure you can really use. Beating other teams on neutral courts counts for something, and when it comes down to it, is the true measure of what a good tournament team can do.

I feel pretty good about tonight's game. I think our head coach will have some ideas on how to play against his friend Brad Stevens. If you check out Butler's loss earlier this season to Xavier, 62-47. One of the assistants at Xavier probably knows John Groce pretty well. Hmm.

And our special assistant, Brandon Miller played for Brad Stevens at Butler, so I think we know Butler about as well as anyone knows Butler. I'm sure we will some nice strategies for tonight's game.

Can't wait for it to start at 5pm out here.

Of course he'll want to win, he's not going to take it easy on him just because it is his friend. However, playing the "he didn't want you" card is cheap and not something you'd do to a close friend when Stevens' decision obviously was WAY more involved than "I don't like their players/team as much."

If it's low scoring, don't think we win. Our pace is to take easy buckets.

Plus, playing the "he didn't want you"-card by Groce is him acknowledging that he wasn't the first choice, or isn't as good as Stevens. While this may be true, no reason for him to bring it up at all.

Based on 11/19 odds to win Muai tournament.

Texas--3/2
NC-8/5

The old fan in me says Butler out-physicals our frontcourt and backcourt and wins by 10-12. The 2012 fan in me says " Why the F not?"

68-61 Illinois

Illinois vs. Butler for Maui Invitational Championship

"Illinois is a tough team," second-year Silverswords coach Eric Bovaird said. "They can really shoot the basketball, and defensively they are tough, too. We had a hard time, harder than we've ever had getting it into the paint and creating things."

I was at the 2000 Maui Invitational, wearing orange at all three games, one of the highlights of my life! It was hotter than blazes in that little gym (air conditioning came in 2003), but I didn't care. Just like back then, all I want is for the Illini to win this game; I don't care how or by how much. JUST WIN, BABY

I-N-I!
