In response to the original post in this thread, I think it's now safe to say that in his first season Matt Bollant has made Illinois women's basketball relevant again.

Hopefully, he can continue to improve the program as he recruits more and more of his own players.

He's a great coach. Wisconsin didn't want to hire him two years ago. Their loss - our gain.

Coach Bollant should be up for national coach of the year if he keeps this up. Would be stunned if he doesn't leave UI for a blueblood in the next 3-4 years.

Why can't Illinois become a "blueblood" in women's basketball? What does UCONN have that Illinois doesn't?

Why can't players like Tamika Catchings, Candace Parker, and Morgan Tuck stay home and make Illinois into a nationally-competitive program?

Illinois can become a blue blood, heck anyone can. But you ask what they have that we don't. They have a tradition of drawing more than 10,000 fans per game, while we average 1,000. That's obviously a different feel. Bollant will have to find 9,000 new people per game to be comparable to UCONN (and they are not #1 in women's attendance).

Well this year according to fightingillini.com we are averaging 1923 at home. Obviously there is still work to be done, but we are already showing improvement on attendance.

If Illinois can win even close to as consistently as UCONN, the fans will come. When Grentz first got here and they were competing for Big 10 titles (didn't last long), they were drawing lots more fans. I don't know what their best crowd was, but I'm pretty sure it was closer to 10k than 1k.

Illinois will be extremely fortunate to hold on to Bollant. The cards would have to fall just the right way. Good luck with that. It will take great foresight by Thomas and the UI to pay him now for future results.

That said -- and we're getting way ahead of ourselves here -- if one of the elites came after him there's absolutely nothing UI could do, obviously. How much do programs like UConn and Tennessee pay their coaches?

I'm no WBB expert but I think Tenn has a new coach now that Summit has retired. Geno at UConn is not close to retiring. There are other high profile programs that could come calling. So yes MT could pony up with more $$ to keep Bollant here, but when you are only drawing a few thousand a game it would be hard to compete salary wise with a more established program.

I should probably stop watching. Turned it on and Indiana has gone on a 10-2 run to start the second half...

This is the first time I've been able to watch the women play this year. They look really good. Bollant is awesome.

Illinois can absolutely become a blue blood program in the next few years.

I couldn't find a forum or anything for the women's team, but they deserve a lot of credit this year. ESPN Bracketology has them at a 9-seed : http://espn.go.com/ncw/bracketology. This is one year after they finished 9-23 (2-14). Big props to Mike Thomas with the Matt Bollant hire.

I've watched a few games now. The women's game is very different to watch, but I'm pleased to see the women's program coming to life.

Does the Illinois women's team have a legit shot at Tori McCoy? She goes to Champaign St. Thomas More but her AAU coach is getting calls from Baylor and UConn.... It'd be tough to turn down an offer from Geno Auriema.

The women are on BTN playing at Purdue right now. The winner gets a first round bye and avoids a Thursday game in the BTT. With a win, it would be the first time since 2007 that the Illini women wouldn't play on Thursday.
