Its a farm though. So maybe the arena should look like an enormous house. Then build a couple parking garages that all look like that red barn. Surround the whole property with one of those 3 bar wooden fences. Plant corn everywhere else.

But clearly, the organizations able to think long term (State Farm) can get a terrific long-term deal from an organization forced to think short term (university).
Well considering the figures listed for other venues, it seems at the moment State Farm is overpaying. The highest annual value on there was $1.4 for TCF Bank Stadium and we're making $600k more than that. So we get a great deal now, but may not be getting as good of a deal towards the end of the deal. Regardless it's still a positive.

Kudos to Mike Thomas.

18 months ago, $2M a year was the biggest naming deal for any college arena in America. I doubt it's increased more than a little since then.

Based upon that article, it sounds like they needed $60 million to get this project off the ground and went out as many years as necessary to get that cash.

As for those of us up here who still insist on thinking of Champaign-Urbana as backwards and a cow town... they're a-holes. One of the things I'm happiest about after spending four years in Champaign is my changed perspective on smaller towns. I went down thinking they were boring and a waste of time; now, I realize that every town has its pros and cons. Anyone willing to talk trash about a place because of where it's located needs to open their mind (unless that place is Bloomington, Indiana. Then they can be as prejudiced as they'd like.).

The Farm is a good nickname. This sponsorship deal is good for us, too. Overall, I'm pleased with how this went down.

Haha that's generally the response I'll get from them too.

Yup. But I think most people will get over this one. As the Chancellor said in the presser, the building never really had a name before--it had a description. The fact that some people tried to make the "The" in The Assembly Hall meaningful just shows how bland the old name was. State Farm Center is punchy, and the association with a respected company is fine with me.

I'm fine with the name, but experience suggests that renaming a venue is a lot harder than naming it when built. People are going to continue calling it the Assembly Hall for decades.

Not to mention all the Loosiers who will think they have won the battle for the "real Assembly Hall."

+1 Just like the "Willis" Tower is still the Sears Tower to most everybody.
