In the first round of the big ten tournament the Illini women were down 2-0 and down a player because of an early red card to Minnesota, who beat them 3-0 earlier in the season. They came back to tie the game and then won it in penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods.

Hopefully, this locks up their NCAA tournament bid. Now they advance to face either Penn State or Iowa in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament.

That was a great defensive effort and job well done in goal. Penn State put a tremendous amount of pressure on, especially at the end of the game. Well done ladies!

So UI does in fact have a successful team in football, albeit the non-American football variety.

Illini Tame Tigers in PK Shootout, Move to 2nd Round

"A lot of credit to Missouri for they put us under a lot of pressure and with the style they play, I told our kids that we would have to weather the storm, and we certainly did," said Illinois head coach Janet Rayfield. "This Illinois team is special, and tonight we fought hard and defended well to beat a good Missouri team."

FYI Soccer fans, Vanessa DiBarnardo is still back in Chapel Hill in the hospital, Vanessa was injured in a collision with an NC player late in the first half, tried but could not continue. She had difficulty breathing and they took her to the hospital. She is under going surgery tomorrow, the UI hasn't released the type of injury so I will not at this time, she should have a full recovery. Its been hard on everyone involved with coaches and family traveling back and forth. So keep Vanessa in your thoughts if you would.

Vanessa is an elite player and a tough kid. Very sorry to hear about the surgery--has to be particularly hard on her family and the rest of the Illini team. Here's hoping for a full recovery and the world-class soccer future she deserves.
