Chicago Cubs 2024

Cuas is bad. This is twice now this year that the pen coughed up an enormous lead. In August, you look back at these types of games when you're lamenting a burned out bullpen.
People will say not to fret a lost game in early April but from what 2019 and 2023 showed us - every win matters. Postseasons can be made or missed by not putting away winnable games like this

Didn't Fan Anyone

Who do you trust in that bullpen? Smyly? Leiter?
I think that once Taillon comes back....Brown?

Losing Merryweather for a while hurts, losing two starters has hurt....Counsell doesn't have a ton of places to turn when it comes to the pen. It's a matter of which grenade blows up the least. When your closer can't close games.....that hurts. That's two blown games this year and if not for miraculous defense in the 9th versus LA....it would have/should have been 3.

they are a bona fide closer away from being legitimately good .
as is, its a lot of smoke and mirrors

Apparently top to bottom the NL central is the toughest division. Throw that out there now that the 0-162 and 2-160 pathways are gone.

Instead they put him on IL. Down to 2 original starters.
I guess we will be seeing what some of the kids can do before we expected...

I'm not of the opinion that Kyle is washed. He was an above average pitcher last year. Yes, he's 35, but he's never had the kind of stuff that would bring on a steep and sudden decline. He left a lot of pitches up yesterday, and the Padres sat back and spanked them the other way. If he can keep the ball down, he'll be fine. If he's dealing with some discomfort, that would explain the lack of control.

I never feel confident when Hendricks is starting. Just has the kind of stuff that requires almost perfect location and that’s hard to count on consistently. How did we get so thin on pitching? It’s gonna be a long summer.

When's the last time the Cubs were "thick" with pitching? 2018ish?

I read that Cuas was sent down but still no mention of him or Hendrix (or who was replacing them) on Cubs website.
I guess they don't have to make it official until before tonight's game.
Probably Wesneski and Thompson? 🤮

Good article, and shows that pretty much all of Hendricks' problems are 3rd time through the order, as is increasingly common in baseball.

It's kind of offensive to those of us who long for the days of Nolan Ryan, but having a guy who's just going to give you 4.5ish innings per outing can be useful if those innings are good.

But you need a deep and flexible bullpen to make that work at any scale, which is a big question mark for the Cubs at the moment.

Boy would Jordan Montgomery look good in this rotation right now 🤬

Speaking of which, lol

but I cant tell you how many times Hendricks has given up 3+ runs in the opening frame in the last couple years
its been a lot
its not just the 4th or 5th inning with him .

good location and mixing up pitches is his strength, his 84 mph fastball is his problem tho
