May built one great team which atrophied a bit the second year. Kelsey has had sustained success at Winthrop, rolling through multiple roster constructions dominating the conference, then succeeded again at Charleston.

Memphis doesn't sloppily turn the ball over at the end of their first round game last year and Dusty May is a name for Saint Louis and DePaul, not Louisville and Michigan. Kelsey's resume is not vulnerable to a single random event changing it that way.

Self kinda had the merits of both May and Kelsey at that stage, plus he was a decade younger than those guys.

I mean they'd been at a higher level than BU, sure, but BU went 53-1 in conference at SFA and scored two NCAA upsets. He had everybody's attention, including this board when many were advocating for Groce's sacking a year earlier.
For better and worse, I've developed a highly subjective and totally "from my gut" spectrum of mid-major coaches. 1-10 scale with 1 being John Groce and 10 being Bill Self.

I have May and Kelsey in the 6-7 range on this scale. Both have a number of quallities that could translate well to the power conference level, but both have a number of questions. For May, he obviously has the Final Four experience and the turnaround experience at FAU. However, he also has a season with a pretty big letdown and only one school where he's been a head coach. Kelsey has a longer track record of success and two programs. However, he doesn't have the signature NCAA upset/run.

If you forced me to choose, I'd probably give May a better chance to succeed by a very slight margin. However, I think that's more because I think Michigan is a better turnaround candidate right now than Louisville is. It's going to take a pretty major cultural change at Louisville after everything that has happened there the last 7-8 years. Full disclosure that I felt Archie Miller was going to be extremely successful at Indiana, so take my opinions with a very healthy grain of salt.

It looks like Wright State coach Scott Nagy, son of former Illini assistant Dick Nagy (under Lou Henson), is going to be named the new SIU coach unless things fall through. Has had a pretty good run at Wright State.
Yea I finally thought I had some news Ole Indy didn’t have regarding Morehead. St Coach heading to SIU and Indy said hold on. Well looks like Indy showed he’s still the Goat lol.

In fairness, I think Spradlin was SIU’s first choice. I suspect he is hoping the Western Kentucky job opens. That said, some coaches I trust think highly of Nagy. If they can become competitive in NIL in the Valley, Nagy could get the Salukis back into contention in that league.

Saw this post on FB about Indiana State coach Josh Schwartz, some of it seems wishy-washy but if true wonder what why he’s going to SLU over two bigger schools including his Alma mater.View attachment 32795
Rumors are ISU might offer 1.3 for 5 years. Possibly as high as 1.8. Sounds like trying to up NIL levels. Strive to be Gonzaga of the Midwest. If the 5 starters return they would win the Valley by 4 or 5 games.

Both those guys were expected to leave. Some rumors on Dix as well (not sure if he actually leaves) which would be a huge loss. That being said, Fran is expected to stay next year but likely be done after that
I've always wondered... did Iowa not have any interest in and/or from DeVries?

What makes you say that? May inherited a dumpster fire and immediately made them respectable. Then a top half team in their conference. Then a damn good team the past 2 seasons. In a much tougher conference btw. He seems like a heck of a hire for UM.

Keep in mind that Kelsey was successful at a much lower level. Living in Charleston I've seen his teams play a lot, and I'm not sure how well his style of play translates to the big leagues. We'll soon see I guess. He is a high energy guy, much liked in the community, so wish him success at the Ville
The same could be said of John Groce.

Not sure which part of the bolded you’re referencing (success at a mid Major, his style translating, or high energy) but I figured I’d throw some numbers out there for comparison.

Pat Kelsey is 149-61 in league play. (Just over 70% win rate)

John Groce was 34-30 (just over 50%) before getting the nod to lead a high major.

So when it comes to how well they perform against comparable coaches, competition, and talent, it can’t really be said they are similar.

Groce has improved at Akron though, at 80-48. (~62%) But still not as good as PK.

Pat Kelsey absolutely crushed his press conference. That guy made me believe and I don't care for Louisville at all. Hard to say how good he will be but he will have LVille back to respectability within 2-3 yrs tops. He even made an inside joke that he was his wife's 3rd choice(backhanded comment that he was not Louisville's first choice either). The guy has charisma and energy. He should be fine
