We waited months to announce Tim Anderson. I'm sure we could do the same for OA if everything else works out.

Interesting his wife wants to stay in Lexington when their daughter presumably graduated.

Antigua signed a three-year contract upon returning to Kentucky, and that deal expires this summer on June 30, 2024. If Antigua is still on staff at the end of June, he will then be owed a $400,000 “retention bonus,” per the terms of his contract. So if Pope does not intend on trying to retain him at Kentucky, then he is in a bind because there is no way Orlando will voluntarily leave before the end of June so that he collects the retention bonus. Kentucky will either have to buy it out early so that Pope can have another coach signed on his staff and out on the recruiting trail or whatever team that signs Orlando as an assistant will have to pay him the bonus as part of his compensation package, which is no small amount. It may be a matter of who blinks first since the end of June is a long way off with all of the portal activity currently taking place.
Why wouldn't they just terminate the contract before June 30th? Probably just waiting to see if Pope keeps him on, but there's no reason for them to agree to any buyout if he's going elsewhere. And no reason his next employer would have to pay that bonus (although indirectly part of the negotiations, I'm sure).

Being completely impartial here, Lexington as a city blows CU out of the water.
That’s a huge factor. He’s going to be working all the time and traveling, the last thing he wants is his wife at home complaining how much she hates where they live.

Being just a small town cowpoke, I’ve always been ignorant and wondered about this… what makes it better? To me, all cities seem the same. They have restaurants, bars and Costco. What’s so much better? 100% genuine question.
For starters:
Vibe / charm
Access to cultural activities
Diversity in people, thought, food
Cosmopolitan vs. insular
Traffic
Political leanings
Cost of living
General education level of city
Quality of schools
Access to nature, parks, beaches
Walkability
Bicycle friendliness
People friendliness
Access to good coffee, tea, and/or beer
Etc.

Here is the link to his Kentucky contract. Orlando Antigua
In summary, Kentucky can't terminate Orlando in the absence of cause. In addition, under its terms, in the event of the Head Coach leaving Kentucky, Antigua is still entitled to continued payment of the compensation set forth in the contract for 6 months from the Head Coaches resignation, specifically including payment of the $400,000 June 30, 2024 retention bonus.
Thus, even though Pope would be a fool not to retain Orlando if he could under a new contract, to the extent that Pope wants to hire his own staff from scratch or to the extent that Orlando doesn't want to work for him, then the only way to fill Orlando's position before June 30th is to pay off all of Orlando's remaining compensation including his retention bonus immediately to fulfill the termination requirements of the contract so that an assistant coaching vacancy exists that Pope can fill for one of his 3 off campus recruiting assistant coaches, which Pope desperately needs as he starts his new position.
Orlando is completely in the driver's seat here and Kentucky is at his mercy until June 30, 2024 when Orlando once again becomes a free agent.

Strange list. What about proximity to the ... uh, ooops ... State Farm Center.

Just out of curiosity, if we hire him effective July 1, he couldn't recruit/work for us until then, but he could get a double payday?

Not a cowpoke here, and have instead lived in metropolises around the globe nearly all my life. I think you have a good point. Mrs Krush grinned when I showed her your post. So I'd advise that you just keep on doing your thing, cowpoke. It's cool.

One of my friends said to me, very early in my career, about the city he lived in and which made snobby-me uneasy: "The water tastes good, there are a couple of good radio stations (yes, an anachronism, I know), and I've got a good job here. What's not to like?"

Well everything you listed here is in favor of C-U.

There is very likely a conflict of interest clause in his contract that calls the hiring by another institution effectively a resignation or breach of contract.

When I was single I went on job interview there and I was amazed at number of beautiful southern belles. I am surprised Mrs. Antigua wants to leave Orlando in such a target rich environment.

Nobody cares about ASU in Arizona though, it's all UA.

ASU's entire value proposition is to be there for the Cali kids who weren't smart enough to get into the UC schools, not a huge recipe for crazy fandom/big time donors willing to pony up cash.
I lived in AZ for an awhile and it seemed like PHX was pretty biased towards ASU. Of course I was there when Plummer, and Tillman were playing football. Eddie House and a few good bball players were there too.

As someone who left CU:

If you like outdoor activities, most places are more scenic, and offer more options than CU. I'd rather hike in nice green woods with rolling hills than the cornfields. How close do you want to be to a nice lake, or maybe skiing? I certainly do not miss the freezing winters and hot, humid summers.

Restaurants: Larger cities often have a larger choices in restaurants. So long as you can find the ones you like, having more doesn't matter. CU isn't bad. It isn't the same as a bigger city where you can go to the place that specializes in X.

Entertainment: Want to go see live bands? The theater? The symphony? The ballet? Have every major musical/dancing act stops though? Around here during the summer I can see 3-4 there free outdoor concerts a week within a 7 mile radius. CU is way above average for its size in this regard. It still isn't the same.

Travel: Its nice to be able to take direct flights most places. Visiting CU is a major pain. Going from NYC to/from LA is easier (JFK and LAX are terrible).

People: Larger populations mean there is a larger chance of finding people with similar interests. CU may have a group with your interest. What if you really don't click with someone in that group. In the larger area, you can find another group.

Sports: Want to go see the pro football/basketball/soccer/baseball/... team? (I hear some people are demented this way.)

Imagine being used to all of the above and then moving to CU.

CU does have its advantages: It is CHEAP to live in CU. Krannerts punches well above the city weight. Traffic is rarely an issue. The town is mostly safe. Most importantly, you can watch IL games in person.

There are definite downsizes of living in bigger cities: Cost. Traffic. Travel time. Crowding. Many not so nice neighborhoods. Bureaucracy. If you have time and money, the two biggest issues mostly go away.

There is no double payment. His contract ends on June 30, 2024 and the $400,000 retention bonus that he qualifies for under his employment contract on June 30, 2024 is "in consideration for Coach's service to the University prior to June 30, 2024". The "bonus" was an incentive for Orlando to fulfill the entire 3 year contractual term of his employment and not take another job until at least after the contract ended on June 30, 2024, so it was compensation that he earned before June 30, 2024.

I took some time off from IL board (I know, heresy) after the UCONN game and have spent quite some time catching up, especially with this thread. From what I have read and giving the insiders' comments proper weight (read, more weight), I think I would rather have Yaklich (and I am probably in a party of one) and then Clark or maybe Cohen although I think an insider said that wasn't happening. I just feel his skills and abilities as a defense coach (defensive coach?, coach of defense?) are something Illinois sorely needs. Or, does OA also have those skills? On the other hand, there were insider comments about how badly BU wants OA back so I guess I am wrong. I thought of putting Boynton as my first as he is a defense guy and much more but I really don't think he is leaving Michigan now. Too late.

Also, I thought I read somewhere that Pope was not going to retain any of Calipari's Assistant coaches. I think some people were wondering about that.

Also, in the April 8-9 Coaches Carousel there were many, many (oh, man, so many) pages of the whole UK and Calipari mess and who would replace him and two people actually posited Pope as a possible candidate. On page 10 (and that thread is 25 pages, almost all of it about the UK situation) Oskeefan said, "Mark Pope from BYU could be a darkhorse candidate for the Kentucky job." And on pg. 14 BfosterL wrote, "Pope would get a look I would think". Absolute silence was the reaction. Eventually toward the end of that thread Pope's name was raised again and a few people reacted with dismissive replies, which is understandable. Still seems like a not-so-good decision. But anyway, shout out to Oskeefan and BfosterL. for their prescience.

Yep. Largest enrollment in the country. Pretty wealthy and large alumni base. Only major school in one of the most populated metros in the country. Checks all the boxes. Would love to see them get their sports act together someday as an alum myself (grad school).
I could recruit 5⭐️ yearly to ASU.

What do you love more? Money or beautiful women? Oh, both?

Here, let me take you over to the pool off campus. Oh wow, look at the scenery, aren't they all beautiful? They love basketball players and each one of them has a bag of money, go pick one.
