Let me tell you about my night (since many enjoyed my description of my week after last weekend). First, as everybody has already stated, the announcers were just horrible. When my wife says something about their ineptitude without prompting from me, that tells you a lot (I don't even listen to announcers unless it's somebody like Hummel, but when they are talking out of their !!!, it catches my attention). Not going to bother citing all their annoying ignorant comments. Second, the studio crew fawning all over Pearl almost made me vomit.

Now, to my extended family sports text thread: The only comment all evening (I guarantee almost everyone was watching basketball) was from one of the Pitt contingent about how great the ACC was after the Clemson upset. No comments after UNC went down. Not a word from the Duquesne group. But, here was the absolute best 3 posts in row:
Son-in-law #1 (Syracuse fan, but not an obnoxious ACC fan) "What's up with ILL playing all this defense?"
Son-in-law #2 (Iowa fan, that knows sports and is realistic) ""Love it. F Iowa St."
Son: He posted a Gif from Happy Gilmore with the words: "Happy learned how to putt" "Uh-oh"

I love those guys. Not a single comment from any of the Pittsburgh family contingent. Not ONE word. I loved it.

Regarding Uconn (clearly the best in the country), I have seen Illinois play many games this year that would have been good enough to beat UConn. And I am not a fan that wears Blue and Orange colored glasses. And remember Kansas 69-UConn 65, Seton Hall 75- UConn 60, and Creighton 85 -UConn 66.

I have never been more excited to watch The Fighting Illini, even the Final Four seasons, than I am for this game.
Regarding UConn fans talking about their loss to Kansas-I think it’s funny how many of them are spinning that as some heroic effort. This was a Kansas team that spent the last four weeks of the season getting repeatedly mule-kicked, including in a conference tournament quarterfinal against a team that was a mid-level NIT team.

Kansas was missing its best player the last 4 weeks and UConn was missing Stephon Castle (a projected top 10 pick) when they played @ Kansas.

Tyler Hansbrough is punching the air somewhere tonight 😎

You mean he was punching himself in the head. Seems more believable

It's worse than that. I had TWO attend Iowa and one Missouri. Years ago one of my brother-in-laws (sadly former B-i-L) said, "You have failed miserably as a father."
I’m with you-one attending Iowa right now.

We’ll have a unique doubleheader with the Iowa women followed by the Illini men on the big screen at our house since he’ll be home for Easter weekend.

What I continue to come back to:

We shot 15 of 29 from the FT line.

TSJ picked up his 4th foul with 11 minutes left in the game.

Against the #1 defense in the country, the 4th ranked team.

And we still won. Grit and grind, last night was. Definition of survive and advance.
To piggyback off this, when we played Morehead State:
-Morehead State punched us in the mouth with 3 immediate triples
-Riley Minix & Latham went over their season averages and played like stars
-Shot 37% from 3
-Won the offensive rebounding battle
-Won the turnover battle (forced 7 steals)

And we worked them. We find ways to win!

Minix was scary. Might be the most talented player we've played so far.

I don't like reading the headlines (most of them) that have this or a similar version, "Illini win to make it to the Elite Eight (or Sweet 16) in 19 years". I mean, big "yay!!!" for the first part but "oof" on the second. When I read those headlines I go from giddy to depressed in the same sentence.

I was pretty fired up about the Coleman charge they called a block. Then the announcer says “yeah, he did move at the end.” He did not. Definite charge drawn, imo.
The game was like a European soccer match with the way the Cyclones flop on defense and they often got the call rewarding that garbage. Then, the most legitimate defensive play of the game with Coleman taking the full hit for an obvious charge with beautiful positioning is called a block. As a longtime former zebra, I almost threw my beer through the TV screen I was so outraged. That was an absolutely terrible call by the ref involved.
Coleman played beautiful all around basketball last night. The follow-up play to TSJ's late steal for the dunk where Coleman came flying through the air out of nowhere and got his hands on the inbounds pass, just missing out on the steal and ending up in the seats is a play that I could not believe was not commented on by the announcers covering the game. If he makes that steal, the game is over.
Hopefully, his all around game is attracting more attention to him by NBA scouts. He deserves to be rewarded for his selfless team play and leadership of this amazing ILLINI team. Thank you Coleman!

Coleman's defense can not be overstated. Nothing came easy for Iowa State. The big lineup with him on a guard was huge and it's such a blessing for this team to have his versatility.
He was AWESOME last night, and put exactly the film out there NBA scouts are looking to see.

In a game where TSJ's uncharacteristic lack of foul discipline and shakiness at the free throw line badly cost us despite all the other brilliant stuff he did, I'd call Coleman the MVP.

Did anyone else get Penn St flashbacks when we fouled that 3 pt shooter?
You mean when Dain fouled that 3 point shooter? ARGH!!! Brutal. I was shocked that Brad had him in the game at that point. But I really think that one of Brad's most impressive coaching achievements is how much he is getting out of Dain, Luke and Dra in the Tournament and how much faith he is showing in them. My strong suspicion is that this is one of the motivation tools he is using to make sure they all return next season and with the way things are going, if the NIL is there why wouldn't they want to???
If Brad and his staff don't find a way this off season to design an offense that gets Luke at least 6 to 8 three point shots a game next year and gets Dain 10 to 12 inside touches, I will be surprised and disappointed. They both have unique skill sets on offense that need to be maximized no matter who is brought in through the portal!

Everyone who slandered Luke this year should feel dumb. Dude sacked up and hit some of the biggest shots in Illinois basketball in the last twenty years
I advocated for BU to keep playing Luke because eventually he's the type of player that can hit a couple of huge three-pointers, get a huge rebound or make an all-out hustle play. He's going to play a big role next year as well--assuming he stays.
