Let's stir the pot on a Monday afternoon:

Would you leave football to the wolves, Vanderbiltification, if it meant basketball becoming a Kansas/Kentucky level predator in the NIL space?
1. This dying network TV exec led super league nonsense is based on football, so unless you want to be in new Div 1A...
2. There are plenty of schools who juggle football, basketball, women's hoops, AND baseball (and a couple of these schools aren't in the SEC or B1G to boot) so this idea rings hollow...
3. By the way I already know that NIL gets its money separately from TV money, but an NIL system that relies on rich donors and grandpa & grandma's monthly check isn't the best system..... I think the TV/streaming money may dry up come time after the next media rights deal, but some of that should be able bee allocated to NIL now.
4. Positive note: if there is a school who do an "NIL Moneyball," Illinois has a ready made source of computer geeks and professors to pull it off hehe.

No way....I'd prefer to be consistently competitive in each rather than UK in one, Vandy in the other. That was the state of our being through late in the Tepper years, with football consistently mid-pack or slightly above and basketball top quarter of the conference. All it takes is the right FB coach to get us there, and it very well may be BB.

Kinda scary how much some programs and those that support them are willing to spend.

It's scary because Illinois football is a "have not" in the scheme of the top-40 programs. If Illinois football had an extra $15 million annually to pump into their program and the narrative was curtailing those expenses across the system, we would be [rightly] going bonkers.

Bingo ... 6-6 with the every 3 years or so going 8-4 or 9-3 ...

It is going to be very difficult with the new Big Ten though ...

Prime example: I see 3 games this year that I can already tell you will likely be losses ... I don't think anyone expects us to dominate the Penn State, Oregon and Michigan of the FB world though ...

But last year ... It was all the close losses (Wisconsin, IU, Iowa, NW) ... All by 4 points or less ... There is your 9-3 season right there ...

Year before ... You lose by 3 to IU and 2 to Michigan ... Should have won both ... Especially IU and the zebras gave it to Michigan of course ... But you win those 2 games and you're a 10-2 football team ...
Michigan is probably the best chance at an upset, at least of the 3 you mentioned. I don’t think they’ll be all that great this year, and as I’ve said before am penciling that one in as a W this year… perhaps overly optimistic but we’ll see. Win half of the one score games… things’ll be looking pretty decent

We won five games by an average of 3 points. We were just as close to being 0-12 as we were to 9-3.

double sucks:
if someone could explain this, I'd appreciate it
Can’t reply specifically to Calvin Smith, but Purdue does have six or seven former Illinois coaches/staffers that either coached or were involved with the recruiting of our transfer out players. Many relationships are already established. I’m not sure if it’s normal for a coordinator to take that many guys from the program he leaves , but maybe BB was fine with those coaches & personnel that did leave.

We'll have to see how good these players end up being long-term, but pretty sad we keep losing players/recruits to the mighty Boilermakers.
