These power 5 coaches do value their job because of development and stuff like that but the main reason is the millions of dollars they make….those coaches will do whatever they can to keep those high paying jobs.
Yes. These are also HIGHLY competitive people. They have a need to win.

Building the program is just as important, if not more important than building the individual. If the program is run right, the individual will benefit as a result of having experienced the program, and all that comes with it.
The program has to be nurtured above the individual, for it to maximize the potential of both. When you make concessions for the individual, it undermines the standards of the program.
Opportunity will come for the individual, when it is best for the program. When the program stops being what is best for the individual, they can move on.
The HC is the CEO of the program. His primary responsibility is not the players. It’s the program. If he builds it right, the player grows because of it. It doesn’t work if you try to it the other way around.
Compete at the highest level you can compete. Win every game you can. Winning creates interest, which fuels recruiting, and revenue.
There’s a romantic vision of what this is, where you don’t “recruit over” a player and you give opportunities to guys out of loyalty.
You can buy into it if you want, but you’ll languish in mediocrity.
Get the best players you can get. Let them fight for playing time. They will be better for it, and so will the program.
No promises, no short cuts. Earn it.

Wondering if some the "insiders" have some kind of percentage of possibility for the portal. I have heard Sincere Parker and Storr are 2 that may ne more likely than some others. Also seems like the Mercer kid from Indiana may be a done deal. Any info is appreciated.

His whole family loves what the staff have done for Dra. His mom said she’s never seen him more happy. If I’m not mistaken underwood laid out a whole development plan to the family on his visit and they bought in. Nothing in terms of playing time this year was promised at all. So refreshing to see a kid looking at the bigger picture.

Really interested to see next year’s system. Really good players with DGL, Dain, and Buck that don’t fit this year’s system. Would have fit well with Trent, Kofi system. So do we recruit players to fit this year or adapt to skills in place? So far BU has been pretty good at adaptation and it’s probably going to depend on what he can get in the portal. However I don’t expect the same looking team next year.

If that isn't culture, I don't know what is. I love it.

It's amazing how quickly they recovered from the prior year. By all accounts, there were a few me-first players. Guys that stayed are ones that have really bought in. There's been some serious all-conference talent here over a sustained period, and no shortage of leadership this year. From my vantage, it looks like Underwood has steadily improved as a coach too. The way he's adjusted and dealt with a ton of serious changes in the sport, a year of assistants getting poached to Kentucky, and a whole lot else is really impressive. Glad they're seeing so much success. It really speaks to everyone in and around the program, top to bottom and supporters, to have build it up from where it was. Incredible. Makes this season that much more special.

It’s been said by Lville and a couple others in here that Jake Davis from Mercer will be announcing soon. And the big fish would be a couple to a few weeks away yet but once the season is over things will ramp up.

Yeah there's a lot we don't know yet, or at least that isn't finalized yet. If Boswell or Storr wind up in the portal those will be big deals we're heavily involved with.

Nonetheless, it's like high school recruiting, there's risk involved in letting good opportunities fall off the board waiting for "big fish". NIL only changes that calculus so much.

But the scouting is tricky too. Paul Mulcahy was rated ahead of Marcus Domask by 247 as a transfer last year. Dalton Knecht was only #13. Matthew Mayer was ahead of Terrence Shannon in 2022.

My instincts always go toward taking the bird in the hand. But I place a lot of trust in our staff, even after getting depantsed by RayJ last year. Daddy Brad finds a way.

I feel Sincere is a good role player that brings defensive tenacity and DGL has I higher potential for sure. However, I would not label them just yet as really good B10 players. They have quite a bit of development still to come to reach that level. Dain should we be able to be really good if we can keep him. Dain certainly can be a really good B10 player and possibly All B10. One if the main reasons we are in dire need of some quality transfers is that if we are to contend for championships DGL, Sincere, Amani, Morez and others have to show they are ready to be really good next season. I believe one or two may pop but I dont see how they can be labeled as really good just yet. We are losing really good players in TSJ, Hawkins and Domask if no waiver is granted and that gap in talent for now is pretty significant. Thank God for the portal!

The thing about projecting transfers is there's no way of fans like me projecting how the fit will work. For example, people looking at Domask at SIU were looking at a guy that was the No. 1 scoring threat and not surrounded by a cast like Illinois has. In fact, the MD we saw in the early days at Illinois was not the MD we now see because Underwood transformed the offense to run through MD even before TSJ's suspension. That opened up a lot of the offensive versatility we have come to love watching. That's why I trust Underwood more than ever in terms of talent evaluation.

Sounds like I need to edit my prediction percentage from 75% likely to stay to 90% likely....I am good with that! I really like DGL and the work he has put in. IMHO, he is going to be a tremendous basketball player! I remember when Boo Buie and TJ were just talented underclassman with a bunch of upside..... Not saying that they are the same. Just noting that guys can grow to meet their potential and develop into fantastic (All-American) caliber guys.

Ouch for the gophers, wonder if that means Christie is gone too...
