This is an annoying talking out of both sides of the mouth thing.
"Oh don't worry about it, the staff loves White's attitude, he'll be an EDG, the situation was just bad at Louisville, he's hungry to compete"
but also
"Oh don't worry about it, this enormously talented NBA prospect who is going to transform his mentality under this staff will be a bench role player"
If Tre White brings a new level of effort and professionalism he is going to play a ton. If he doesn't he won't.
So we're good in that sense, I don't think people should be negative about the add, but the justifications are circular and unconvincing.
White is an upside lottery ticket. It's like a baseball team trading for a pitcher with great stuff who can't hit the strike zone and has bad results. You either get an ace or nothing.
Yeah and the 247 rankings are pretty dynamic, guys move around.
I wonder whether Boswell will be above or below Dug McDaniel. I'd rather have Boswell.
I agree with your overall general stance on Tre White and I'll do some workup later tonight to support what I'm saying statistically, but I too see Tre as a moderate risk, high potential ceiling transfer, a tad more extreme but not too dissimilar to our pickup of Guerrier last year who I deemed as low risk, possible high reward. Tre's a kid who definitely has talent, athleticism, size, and has shown he can play defense when he both buys in and desires to. And similar to Guerrier, Tre had a promising freshman year followed by a transfer to team that wasn't a good fit for him and a subsequent fall off in play/effort level.
Tre's underlying stats and metrics are a lot better than many on here suggest, doing solid work on the boards and inside along with getting to the stripe, and he seems to be a big game player, having his best games against Tier A opponents. Honestly, his splits against high end competition are very good. And combined with his projections out of high school,, he does have a lot of potential and a very high ceiling in my opinion.
That said, he looked to pick up some really bad habits both defensively and with his effort level last year and from a character and team fit, there is some reason for caution as when you learn you can get away with coasting, you can easily fall back into that habit during the dog days of the season. And similarly spending a year in a bad locker room with inadequate coaching or leadership also raises a bit of a red flag. That said, I do think with having high energy/leadership guys like Sencire, Ty, and Luke on the team we are better equipped to mitigate these issues if they were to arise.
So overall, he's a moderate risk with very high upside and in our case a solid value pickup/flier. He can work his way into more minutes or work his way down the bench. That'll be up to him. I do like the idea of a player like this being able to compete against Ty, Sencire, or Luke for playing time as it will increase the level of competition, likely camaraderie as well, while keeping him on the straight and narrow always providing him a benchmark for the effort he needs.
