I’ll give Cal credit, he’s a guy of principles, and that principle is he wants to bring in elite HSers and prep them for the NBA.
Honestly reminds me of Prof. Horace Slughorn from the Harry Potter series. Doesn't matter how, but his only mission is to be associated with famous people and part of their developement, even if he was a mediocre professor and did nothing to develop them because they were already great. Cal needs to be associated with NBA players, even if he took NBA-ready talent and did just enough to make sure they stayed NBA talent.

There were rumors that if Coleman or Domask were to come back, we had donors outside of NIL to foot the bill?! Why don't these guys step up to help land players we need through the NIL system? I'm surprised that our basketball NIL pool is very average? We have a huge alumni association.
Interesting take on NIL. As I understand it, and I do not claim to be an authority on the matter, the school has no input into a "bag" of cash with which to award players. Supposedly, only businesses can contract with players for use of their NIL and all exchanges in payment are made between the two. For certain, a GoFundMe account from the Alumni Assoc. or message board posters would result in a death penalty.

Now, it is likely that about 99% of posters who claim that we need to raise more money to pay the players have no clue what it entails. A couple likely know the particulars and understand there may be much that they cannot comment upon without putting the program in jeopardy. Seemingly, the descriptions of what is going on put it appropriately in the realm of "the Wild, Wild, West" where anything goes. It is difficult to confidently state the the Illini program is playing by the letter of the law as most of us hope.

Bottom line is the numbers in the fan base are insignificant if they are all doctors. Those who step up evidently must own a business that can use a players NIL to promote their business/products. As I understand, it is assumed that this is done without involvement from the University or their employers.

Nevertheless, I imagine that the coach and/or AD are made aware of the numbers and advertisers so they can plan. Sometimes, as was the case with Oregon and T A&M last year, those business owners back out or were never there.

Sure would like someone who knows the details to add further clarification and point out where this is wrong.

What? Lol. I have seen a lot of guesses at the Big Ten hierarchy (and that's all it can be, an educated guess), and all have had us #1 or #2 ... and I do not recall seeing Nebraska on any of them. Maybe I am mistaken? If I am, I expect my apologies for people jumping on me a few weeks ago when I said Nebraska is an underrated basketball job and probably better than Iowa at this point. :ROFLMAO: ;)
IIRC...Werner on podcast said something to the effect we were right behind Indiana & Nebraska /OSU were up there as well

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have thrown a huge fit if we had gotten him, but I just didn't think his wants would have gelled well with our younger guards. Plus I'm all for other teams spending big money on guys I don't want as much. Hopefully we use our money to outbid people on some of these rumored guys still out there/soon to be out there.

Lacking in defense....and rebounding...
Might well be #1 offense....but I would question if the DIA has enough money to supply that group with enough basketballs? Seriously, I think we all want a TEAM that wants to and can play elite at both ends....together...while using one ball. What is missing is a Marcus Domask who can score 30+ when opportunity knocks and is also happy to score 6 with 10 assists and 8 boards when opponents want to shut him down. But maybe that guy is in that group...and I have no idea what winning means to them all.

Sounds like you are spot on. As I understand it, aa donor cannot just hand over a check and say "have a great game". The player actually has to do something to 'earn' the money. It can be anything from cutting a tv or radio ad for a business... from Joe's Towing to a regional ad for State Farm. Appearances can include a check to speak at a local service club, to spend a Saturday afternoon doing 'meet and greet' at a local car dealer to stopping by some kid's birthday party and the kids Dad kicks in 1,000 dollars to the kitty. You can also autograph jersey and shirts and any other clothing or just get a cut if licensed clothing with the players name on it is sold. But in the end, the players 'fame' as a player can be turned into cash using their Name, Image or Likeness to add value to some kind of product or service.

Hol' up..... Kalkbrenner is in play again even with McDermott staying? What'd I miss?

#593
You didn't miss much.

You know that week when Oats was in play for a number of schools and then he had a new contract and then he wasn't in play.

That familiar dance is now going to be playing out each year with players.

Thank you sir. Marcus has been the appitamy of what you would want from a college basketball player and person. We were very fortunate to get him to grace the Illini court. He has done nothing but bring honor grace and integrity to the program in his short time here. Wish nothing but success for him in the future.

We might have the money for what we have jotted down or have initial feelers about their prices being. We do not have enough for all three of where the bidding will end up on the open market, because every apex NIL shark will dig deeper than what is perceived to be out there to land those players. It's total Dutch Tulip Craze panic mode out there. That's not some worry about the future, everyone already knows it to be true, you've posted this yourself.

Lock down Onyenso, today (accepting for the sake of the hypothetical that it's possible). Do not wait for Kalk, who is just Beanpole Storr, he just wants top dollar and that won't be us when the music stops.

This isn't sports, this is simple economics. We have the resources to win this game, but only if our strategy is correct. If we start hitting on 17 against a low dealer card we're going to get ourselves killed out there.
You just continue to lose me more and more each post.

Kalkbrenner will leave if he doesn't get paid. How does that work out for Illinois anyway. We weren't willing to pay for Storr, Maddox or any of the other big names.
