He averaged 20.4/8.5/2.6 on the season (a willing passer!), shooting 54.4% from the field (efficient!), including 38.6% on 3s (that's 38.6!), and 71.3% on FTs. I think we could backfill some scoring wings/guards onto the roster if we signed Holmes.

If you are fortunate enough to have a shot at either, you push in all your chips to do so. If getting a David Jones today means we lose out on a shot at DaRon Holmes later, you pull the trigger on Jones today 10 times out of 10.

I keep thinking that Illinois needs to add a big rim protector to the roster. I would love to see us add 7'0" 247 pound Kentucky center Ugonna Onyenso. Perhaps Coach Antigua can make that happen. The only other remaining CENTER whose name I've heard mentioned is 6'10" Alabama center Nick Pringle. But maybe the staff would be willing to go into next season with Morez Johnson, Carey Booth, and Ben Humrichous as the only "bigs" in our rotation? That just seems risky to me. There are always injuries and foul trouble to consider. And we might see centers dominating Illinois inside, just like this past season. Oh well, I just need to wait and see how this plays out. Does Humrichous commit to Illinois? Does Onyenso commit? Does DaRon Holmes?

I think Snake's relatively low production his first year was more a function of lack of minutes (reflecting Lou's general preference for experience and the experienced depth on the front line that year with upperclassmen Winters, Montgomery, Welch and Meents) than his not being ready to produce. And he was producing by the end of the season.

Of the 8 rotation players averaging more than 15 minutes per game, Snake's per 40 minute averages his first year were quite good (19.7 pts, 1st; 9.3 rebounds, 3rd; 1.4 blocks, 2nd; and 63.2% FG%, 1st) and overall compared favorably to each of the upperclassmen playing in front of him. Link His per 40 averages the next season when he was a full-time starter and the team's leading scorer (20.7 pts, 8.9 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 64.1%) were comparable, and ramped up his senior year.

After Montgomery got injured, he got more of an opportunity and ended his first season with the Illini as a starter (in front of Meents) on a Sweet 16 team. He started all 3 games in the NCAA tournament, averaging 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in 36 minutes per game.

Kenny (Snake) was only member of that team who had significant NBA career. 20/20 hindsight Lou should have been playing him sooner. He was an animal the next 2 years.
