That's kind of my point. Lots of rumors that this mystery wing (David Jones) is all but locked up IF he enters the portal/withdraws from the NBA Draft. I'm not seeing it.
Kind of an obvious point, but even if he goes elsewhere, we prefer him entering the portal and going elsewhere to staying in the draft, because we want the NIL ammunition on the board to get spent.

The amount of available money, which is enormous and features several blue bloods, will be spent on the talent available in the portal. The fewer top players, the higher the prices get.

The more top players in the portal diluting the pool, the better the players Illinois' money can buy.

I think Snake's relatively low production his first year was more a function of lack of minutes (reflecting Lou's general preference for experience and the experienced depth on the front line that year with upperclassmen Winters, Montgomery, Welch and Meents) than his not being ready to produce. And he was producing by the end of the season.

Of the 8 rotation players averaging more than 15 minutes per game, Snake's per 40 minute averages his first year were quite good (19.7 pts, 1st; 9.3 rebounds, 3rd; 1.4 blocks, 2nd; and 63.2% FG%, 1st) and overall compared favorably to each of the upperclassmen playing in front of him. Link His per 40 averages the next season when he was a full-time starter and the team's leading scorer (20.7 pts, 8.9 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 64.1%) were comparable, and ramped up his senior year.

After Montgomery got injured, he got more of an opportunity and ended his first season with the Illini as a starter (in front of Meents) on a Sweet 16 team. He started all 3 games in the NCAA tournament, averaging 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in 36 minutes per game.
When did Norman get here? I thought he had to wait to graduate in December

People need to stop trying to distinguish between 4s and 5s. We have three bigs in Ben, Booth and Morez. Maybe we’ll add another. They have different strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes we’ll play two of them at a time. Sometimes only one at a time. They’ll have different roles based on their respective strengths and weaknesses that most likely will not fit neatly into the box of traditional (i.e. 1990s basketball) 4 or 5.
4 and 5 definitely matter when the other team has a post oriented 5. For CH, it's probably a PITA to be that defender so he wants to play with Dain. Some players don't want to be that post defender when you want them to be.
