I understand it is Rick Pitino we are talking about, but it blows my mind St. John's can even afford the roster they have. By all means, we were referenced by multiple outlets to at least be a top-10 NIL basketball school last year, but the way these schools are spending makes me wonder about that or if we have been lapped. Throwing $1 mil plus at guys left and right.

That is, unless, they can't deliver what they are promising (and we can)..
Pitino must be the ultimate salesman. I mean, he is Rick Pitino after all but yeah to do it at St. John’s is really something

Fans of teams with a proud history aren't going to sit around hoping for the best when they understand they can have a direct impact on their team's salary cap. A couple big donors step up and you can get relevant again in a hurry. IMO, the scary teams are the ones who don't have football to contend with, like St John's, Marquette, and Nova.
The lack of a greedy football program sure seems like a factor here doesn't it?

Yeah...Coleman to UConn, after they just dropped a 30-0 run in the E8 on a team he helped lead, would be hard to swallow. Hard to imagine saying this 10 years ago, but I would be absolutely thrilled to see him on UNC if it were down to just those two.

It's not just about 2024-25. They can't keep spending millions for one-year players.
Not sure I understand. If said player gives the team a good shot at a championship, why not. Welcome to the portal, you get what you pay for and our boosters seem ready to make the team competitive.

I understand a lot of things are left to play out and that we will be adding more guys no matter what. But if the season were to start today, what is this team's ceiling?

I have the feeling that Richmond making a decision means that Illinois has already chosen to go in a different direction.

That or the Richmond decision spurs Illinois to quickly make a move in a different direction.

I agree with you, but I'll add, I think people are just recognizing Jake's youth (FR) and thinking that translates to patience in terms of wanting minutes. At least that's my mind set...less about his ability...more about older very capable guys wanting there's now and, hopefully, Jake being ok with that. Definitely, we'll need his shooting ability some games to spark an offense that's struggling.

With no Demin or some other guard/wing scorer we're pretty short in terms of bucket getting, it would just be kind of an oddly shaped roster. Thankfully we're in pursuit of the piece that would complete things.

But the potential upside is huge if we've got Demin, Ivisic, Boswell, Booth, White and Morez, all of whom are on the NBA scouting radar. Young and inexperienced in college basketball, very different from last year and downside risk for sure, but a major major talent level.

Can players transfer mid-season still (eg Dain)? Don’t they have to enter the portal to transfer? Is there a second portal window? Page I found on NCAA website just shows the one that recently closed. So what is the value of leaving a ride open except for saving a little money and not having to worry about keeping more players happy?

To me, his comments to Goodman spoke volumes about multiple things here. He pretty bluntly stated that if he does return to college basketball, it won't be at Illinois. He also mentioned he thought it would be unfair of him to do so because of the new kids coming in who made that choice assuming he would be gone and deserve a chance to shine. He also mentioned he wouldn't play in the B1G if he comes back.

To me that implies he respects basically everything about our process. He is dead set on the NBA but knows it's not a sure thing and that keeping the coaching staff and team in limbo makes things a lot harder for us. And he also won't go to a conference rival.

Kudos to Coleman. I hope he finds a fit in the NBA.
Coleman catapults himself into Dee Brown (et al) All-Timers territory with the quote that he “can’t stand Mizzou” + is ‘disgusted by’ other B1G teams. (You won’t see me in an Indiana jersey… 😂)

No matter if he plays his final collegiate season elsewhere, he will always be an Illini through-and-through, and I would love to see him find his way back someday in a coaching role.

could be CT bias but I would rather see Coleman in the best position possible for him after all he's done for the program the last 4 years. He's an Illini for life regardless and his jersey should be in the rafters

Brad likes Nico ... There is no bad blood ... If Nico wants to return, they would have those discussions ... But he has to understand that he isn't going to play here next year ... It would be to come and sit and play with the PWO when we are up 30 and run scout team in practice ... Does he want to do that ?
And hopefully a free trip to San Antonio next year.
