I didnt think international players could get NIL$ and how are the recent international players playing Pro ball over seas able to still be eligible?
NIL is a visa issue. Can’t be a professional at anything if you come into the country on a student visa. But there are other types of visas. Apparently other schools have found more creative ways around the student visa restrictions. (Sign all the NIL gear while visiting home for the summer, charity work in the players home country, etc.)

I know that in mid-2022 the USA suspended the issuance of student visas to Russian citizens at US embassies located in Russia; what I am not sure about is whether a Russian citizen can currently obtain a US student visa from a US embassy located outside of Russia (in Spain, for instance). I also will note that Egor is now of an age at which he is eligible for military conscription in Russia, which as you might have heard, is at war right now. I suspect that these might be among the "other issues" that our insiders are referencing.

I’m not particularly worried about Egor and Tomislav adjusting to the U.S. game- they have high basketball IQ and are good shooters and passers- those skills will translate

Defensively- learning what gets called and what doesn’t will take some time but we’ll be a really good offense again if they both come

I've always wondered what's the benefit for foreign players that are good enough to have a future at the next level?

Obviously with NIL (if they can be eligible) it can be beneficial for some of the players in lower level leagues. But going to a foreign country to play at a against essentially similar or even lessor competition for a year or 2 just doesn't make sense. Oh and they have to go to class and stay eligible. Like I don't get the draw of college ball for someone like Demin.

I get the relationship he may have built with Antigua but am I missing something else here?
Living in the united states is still attractive to some people. Getting paid to do so is probably even more attractive.

Bro love ...

Regarding UNC need for a big. UNC is thinking about Hawkins but it appears to me UNC needs to replace Babcot, a scorer
, rebounder and rim protector.
CH is a stretch 5 or 4 wing that can handle the ball. I am not sure CH is what UNC needs at this point.
Carolina lost Harrison Ingram, as well. Hawkins would be a lankier stretch 4 in that mold.

I could imagine a scenario where Kylan (1), DGL(2), and Egor(3) are all on the court at the same time.
We can imagine lots of combinations. I could imagine Kylan, two wings, one PF (Morez) and Ivisic.

It’s almost always visa related when it comes to international players
This sounds like a situation that could take a long while to sort itself out. Can BU take the chance on letting this play out, missing in various options, then have a swing and miss?

I would hope that his/their confidence level would have to be at about 95% to go down that path and take that chance.

You literally said we do NOT need another guard/wing if we don't get Demin.

I said we do. And now you agree with that? I'm confused.

Okay, yeah. I mean I've just not seen this... I don't know. I'm assuming he is going to come over and be just fine from the get-go, yes. But, also I think assuming a projected lotto pick is going to fail based on maybe some homesickness or what have you is just hyperbolic devil's advocate stuff.

If anyone else has a better plan than bringing in a top 10 pick lmk 🤷‍♂️

I might know someone, who knows someone, who could help get Demin into the country. I’m told it’s quite easy actually and you don’t need to fill out any paperwork. /s

I sure would like to give it a try

I wonder if there is visa restrictions by US or Russia that have been placed over last two years. I'm sure there are Russian tennis and hockey players in US.

I’d love Coleman back. At this point we have Morez, Tomislav, Ben, and Carey as true 4/5 men. I think Tre and Ty can also play the 4.

We’d have to cut at least one of those guys loose. I don’t see that happening.

I sincerely hope Egor Demin becomes an Illini within the next couple of weeks. Really, really, looking forward to a 2024-2025 Illini basketball team with Egor Demin at it's core. Demin is rated 3rd among PG's in 2025 NBA draft, 22nd overall (https://nbadraftroom.com/egor-demin/) and would be quite a get for Illini. Paired with Tomislav Ivisic (rated 2nd round pick of 28 in 2025 draft https://nbadraftroom.com/tomislav-ivisic/#more-21986), Carey Booth (rated 61 in 2025), Kylan Boswell (rated 74 in 2025 draft), Tre White (rated 134 in 2025 draft), Morez Johnson (rated 41 in 2026 draft with chance to move up to mid first to second round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft or 2027 NBA Draft). Nice role pieces in Rodgers, Humrichous, Gibbs-Lawhorn and Davis. Jakstys probably a redshirt barring injuries. Another G/W pickup or return PG (Moretti?) and the squad is likely complete. Such a team would stack up well to past Illini teams making the Final Four, including 2005 and 1989 teams, and also includes a lot of possible draft picks among the ranks. Would be a very exciting team to watch. Hope Coach Underwood is able to pull off a Demin commitment and signing. If this roster finalizes, I see starters as Demin, Ivisic, Boswell, White and Booth, with Rodgers, Johnson, DGL, Humrichous and Davis off the bench. Too early to estimate minutes and depends on matchups, but I expect approx. Demin 85/Davis?15, Ivisic 60/Johnson 40, White 60/Rodgers 40, Boswell 75/DGL 25, Booth 70/Humrichous 30. Of course Booth, Humrichous, Johnson could all interchange and even Rodgers and White at 4 in small lineups. This lineup has a lot of moveable, flexible pieces, with ability to guard multiple positions. The starting 5 are all multi-level scorers - offensive weapons and can all of them can play capable defense too, unlike recent Illini teams. Most balanced Illini juggernaut in a long while . . IMHO
