Holy cow, amazing stats department

Carey Booth in 2023-24: 1.1 3PG on 3.6 attempts, 29.7%

Marcus Domask in 2023-24: 1.1 3PG on 3.6 attempts, 29.7%

The difference is that 61% of Booth's FG attempts were from 3, whereas only 29% of Domask's were.

Domask has been a good shooter in his career but struggled in that aspect with us and increasingly downshifted that as part of his game, it never dominated his game in the first place.

Whereas this group coming in is all about letting fly, this roster is being built with exactly that in mind.

Watkins would cost the rest of what we have in NIL ...

Lathon and Kasparas would cost what Watkins would cost ... And I am not sure you could get both ... But not because of $$$ ... PT mainly ...

Lathon and Monsanto would allow us to have some NIL left over that we could spread out across the roster ...

I am not getting the vibe from the staff that Brad is as interested in Kelly as he is as the 3 main pieces above ...

And if you want my opinion ... Give me Lathon and Kasparas if those are the 3 options on the table ... And if not that ... Lathon and Monsanto ...

I really like Watkins so that's not to say I don't think he's good ... I just like the value I get with adding Lathon plus 1 ...
I will probably be happy either one. Bottom line is we get somebody as good as Lathon or better.

We had 4 guys shoot over 36% last year, and those 4 guys took 80% of our 3s. If you expect a repeat of that, you are awfully optimistic. I think only Boswell and Humrichous will be over 36%. Maybe Ivisic, but that would be on low volume.
We're bringing in 3 guys that shot better than 36% & Booth who shot 38% on catch and shoot 3s, as well as 37% in his final 8 games.

Adding Watkins or Lathon will not only add another shooter but lead to a lot of good shots available for some really good spot up shooters. This staff is fun.

I'm very confused. Who would you say was more selective with their 3 point attempts for us last year: Luke Goode or Marcus Domask? I'd say it was Goode and almost all of his offensive output was from 3.

How is % of offensive output from 3 correlated to selectivity of shot attempts? I'm genuinely not understanding that.

It's because people take the mere mention of a player as a guarantee. Recruiting is fluid may be a joke to some, but it is 100% absolutely true. I think it has been proven out our insiders get correct information, but they can only relay what they hear from the staff or people with connections to the recruits. Things are changing every day in the portal with kids being promised the moon from all over the place. Just like players and coaches, fans are going to have to adapt to the new world of college basketball. High-turnover and mercenary players is the norm now unless the rules somehow change.
I am grateful for the information and tidbits our insiders provide. It's really not on them that the staff seems to not have a very good closing rate on some of our highest prospects. I don't know if other teams have as much difficulty reeling in the big fish as we do or if this is just the norm for all but a handful of programs. Thanks to the insiders for what info they are able to feed us whether its good or bad. Sometimes we need to remember they are just the messengers and are not responsible for how things play out. I have been guilty of venting about them myself.

Domask only struggled shooting the ball from 3 in non-con early in the season where he was unreasonably cold which drags down his season stats.

After Jan 1st, he shot 37% from 3 in a 26 game sample size. He was legitimately a good shooter from 3 for most of the season and by far the most important part. Basically after they adjusted the offense he shot the ball well and continued throughout the postseason.

Booth was not nearly as good of a shooter and didn't have nearly as consistent of a stretch but he was a freshman and could improve. He did get hot and shoot 36% from 3 for the last 8 games and had a 4 game stretch in December where he shot well but he was mostly very inconsistent and streaky in comparison to Domask who consistently shot well after an ice cold start.

I disagree strongly if you legit prefer 2 options or just 1 Watkins. Give Watkins the rest of NIL if that's what it takes to bring him. I suspect its not actually about money and more than Watkins is not interested in Illinois so those other options are realistic

Thanks for clearing it up.

Thought the pipe dream was Watkins and Monsanto. Guess that's out now...Anyways...

Just my honest opinion - give me Watkins. It's not to say that we won't be good with going the other directions - I think we'll be okay if either plays out - it's just what fits our needs proper. Just feel like we need a star at the wing position. Lathen and Monsanto/Kasparas would be great fits, but I don't know if either screams "star" to the extent of Watkins. Secondly, we've got depth - we'd be 9 deep if we add Watkins.

And didn't Brad say he'll only take 1 more because if more it'll become "too many?" Why not go after the one biggest fish?
